TOPIC: Road Closure Details for the Great Race Special Event at the Rafael Film Center
SUBJECT: A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN RAFAEL
AUTHORIZING A STREET CLOSURE FOR THE 2016 GREAT RACE START SPECIAL
EVENT AT THE RAFAEL FILM CENTER ON WEDNESDAY, JUNE 15th , 2016 FROM 6:00
P.M. — 9:00 P.M. ON FOURTH STREET BETWEEN A STREET AND B STREET
RECOMMENDATION: Adopt Resolution.
BACKGROUND:
The "Great Race" is a time -speed -distance road rally for vintage automobiles, held over fourteen days across the
country. In 2006 the City of San Rafael was the official "Finish Host City" for the Great Race. The Great Race
organizers have contracted with the City of San Rafael to be the "Official Great Race Start City" for the 2016
Great Race.
ANALYSIS:
On Wednesday, June 15th, a special showing of the original 1965 movie, "The Great Race," will take place as a
hosted event for the Great Race participants at the Christopher B. Smith Rafael Film Center. To enhance the
special event this small road closure will be used to create a "Hollywood Style" welcome to the attendees and the
public. It is anticipated the media will cover this event as part of the larger Great Race Start event. Net funds, if
any, from this event will be donated to the San Rafael Public Library.
COMMUNITY OUTREACH:
The Rafael Theatre will include this special showing in their monthly calendar and on-line website.
FISCAL IMPACT:
None. City staff will provide a small amount of in-kind staff time to help produce the event.

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN RAFAEL
AUTHORIZING A STREET CLOSURE FOR THE 2016 GREAT RACE
START CELEBRATION AT THE RAFAEL FILM CENTER ON
WEDNESDAY, JUNE 15th , 2016 FROM 6:00 P.M. — 9:00 P.M. ON FOURTH
STREET BETWEEN A STREET AND B STREET
WHEREAS, the Great Race organizers have contracted with the City of San Rafael to be the
"Official Great Race Start City" for the 2016 Great Race; and
WHEREAS, on Wednesday, June 15th, 2016, a special showing of the original 1965 movie, "The
Great Race," will take place as a hosted event for the Great Race participants at the Christopher B.
Smith Rafael Film Center; and
WHEREAS, after reviewing plans for the event and the traffic patterns, City staff has determined
and recommended that, in the interest of the safety and welfare of pedestrian and auto traffic in the
downtown area, the streets listed below should be temporarily closed to through traffic for the date
and times shown below; and
WHEREAS, the 2016 Great Race Start Special Event at the Rafael Film Center necessitates the
temporary closure of city streets on June 15th as specified below:
1) 6:00 p.m. — 9:00 p.m. on Fourth Street between A Street and B Street
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED:
1. That all of the above findings are true and correct;
2. That, pursuant to the authority of Vehicle Code section 21101(e), for the safety and protection
of persons, both pedestrians and vehicle drivers, the City Council hereby authorizes the temporary
closure of the above listed street for the dates and times described above.

Resolution was duly and regularly introduced and adopted at a regular meeting of the City Council
of the City of San Rafael, held on Monday, the eighteenth day of April, 2016, by the following vote,
