SUBJECT: Resolution authorizing temporary closure of Pt. San Pedro Road from Rivera Drive to
Biscayne Drive for the Marin County Marathon Saturday, April 7, 2012 from 7a.m. to 12 p.m.
RECOMMENDATION: Approve Resolution.
BACKGROUND: The annual Marin County Marathon will be held Saturday, April 7, 2012 from 7 a.m. to
noon, with the start and finish line at McNear's Beach County Park. This is a not for profit event. All net
proceeds are donated to charity, which this year include the Breast Cancer Emergency Fund and the
Friends of China Camp. All marketing and production is done by the event organizer, Mark Liebert. Mr.
Mark Liebert has begun the process of notifying Peacock Gap residents of the event details. Up to two
thousand local and national athletes will participate in the event. The event hours are 7a.m to 1 p.m. and
the street will open after the actual race is completed but before the awards ceremony.
ANALYSIS: Eastbound San Pedro Road from Riviera Drive to Biscayne Drive will be closed from 7 a.m.
to noon. All tributary roads will be open with closure controls and detours as designated by the San
Rafael Police Department. The entire race course will extend into China Camp; this street closure only
covers the portion on City streets.
FISCAL IMPACT: There is no cost to the City. Staff and the Police Department are coordinating any
City involvement with the event producer, the County and the Highway Patrol. The producer will pay for
all related Police Services and is handling the necessary cleanup.
OPTIONS:
• Accept the street closures as proposed
• Modify the streets to be closed.

RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF PT. SAN PEDRO ROAD
FROM RIVIERA DRIVE TO BISCAYNE DRIVE FOR MARIN COUNTY MARATHON
SATURDAY, APRIL 7, 2012 FROM 7AM TO 12PM
WHEREAS, the annual Marin County Marathon necessitates the temporary closure of eastbound
San Pedro Road from Riviera Drive to Biscayne Drive on Saturday, April 7 from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m.;
and
WHEREAS, after reviewing plans for the event and the traffic patterns, City staff has determined
and recommended that, in the interest of the safety and welfare of pedestrian and auto traffic in the
Peacock Gap area, the above street should be temporarily closed to through traffic for the date and
times described above.
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN RAFAEL HEREBY RESOLVES AS
FOLLOWS:
1. That all of the above findings are true and correct;
2. That, pursuant to the authority of Vehicle Code Section 21101(e), for the safety and protection
of persons, both pedestrians and vehicle drivers, the City Council hereby authorizes the
temporary closure of the above listed streets for the date and times described above.
