SAN RAFAEL CITY COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT
Department: City Manager
Prepared by: Nancy Mackle, City Manager City Manager A roval: A
SUBJECT: Resolution Accepting the Proposal from Mayor Phillips to Rename the Pickleweed
Community Center to the "Albert J. Boro Community Center."
RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends the City Council approve the Resolution.
DISCUSSION: Mayor Gary Phillips has requested that this item be placed on the agenda for City Council
consideration. The Mayor proposes that the City Council rename the Pickleweed Community Center to
the "Albert J. Boro Community Center" in honor of former Mayor Boro's contributions to the Center and to
the community in general.
Parks, transit centers and community centers are named for locations, some for neighborhoods, and
others for contributors. The title "Albert J. Boro Community Center" will honor the contributions of our
former Mayor.
Albert J. Boro was elected to the San Rafael City Council in 1987 after serving 16 years as a member of
the San Rafael Planning Commission, and he was first elected Mayor of the City of San Rafael in 1991
and then reelected for four additional terms in 1995, 1999, 2003 and 2007. In addition, Mr. Boro has
served with distinction on a wide array of County and regional boards, among them the Golden Gate
Bridge, Highway and Transportation District, Sonoma -Marin Area Rail Transit, Transportation Authority of
Marin, Marin County Fair Board and Marin County Parks and Open Space.
Mr. Boro has worked tirelessly to revitalize San Rafael's Downtown and to make the Canal neighborhood
an integral part of the larger community. He has contributed greatly to a variety of vital public and private
sector projects, which have changed the face of San Rafael and shaped its future, among them the
Pickleweed Community Center and Library.
Mr. Boro held a particular passion for the Pickleweed Center project, spearheading a capital campaign for
its renovation and seeking long-term funds for its sustainability. It is fitting to rename the Center for Mr.
Boro for his tireless work to keep this facility as the vibrant, central location for many of the Canal
neighborhood's activities.
FISCAL IMPACT: The name change will require the replacement of facility and parking lot signs. Due to
prohibitive costs of changing a library's name in the County -wide system for library cataloguing and book
distribution, the Pickleweed Library will retain its current name.
