RECOMMENDATION: Approve Resolution authorizing temporary closure of Pt. San
Pedro Road from Riviera Drive to Biscayne Drive for the Marin County Marathon,
Saturday, April 4, 2015 from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m.
BACKGROUND: The seventh annual Marin County Marathon will be held Saturday
morning, beginning at 7 am, at McNear's Beach County Park. This is a not for profit
event. All net proceeds are donated to sponsor the Sustainable Sports Swimming
Program to aid the teaching of swimming to under privileged children and various local
and national worthwhile charities.
At the conclusion of 2014 Sustainable Sports events season, (Marathon, Triathlon &
Swim Challenge), the non-profit has raised nearly one million dollars in funds to support
the Swimming Program as well as other local and national charities. Sustainable sports
continues to support existing programs through safe and healthy athletic sports
challenges while continuing to create new programs to increase fundraising for all of the
local non -profits supported by Sustainable Sports activities.
ANALYSIS: The event producer, Mark Liebert will notify local residents in the Peacock
Gap area (via mail or home owner associations) of the event details. In the seven years
of this event, Mr. Liebert has received nearly all positive responses from the residents.
Up to fifteen hundred local and national athletes will participate in the event. All
marketing and production is done by the event organizer.
Eastbound San Pedro Road from Riviera Drive to Biscayne Drive will be closed. All
tributary roads will be open with closure controls and detours as designated by the
Police Department. The event will be coordinated with Police, Fire, and Public Works
Departments.
FISCAL IMPACT: A minimum number of Police Officers will be required and the
producer will pay for all related Police Services. Cleanup is being handled by the event
producers. There will be no cost to the City.
