TO
EQUATOR COFFEE
WHEREAS, Small Businesses are essential to the economic health of the City of San Rafael — they help
create a strong local economy, provide valuable products and services to residents and businesses, and
provide employment opportunities; and
WHEREAS, Governor Jerry Brown declared May 2016 `Small Business Month' in California; and
WHEREAS, the City of San Rafael celebrated national Small Business Week from May 1 to May 7; and
WHEREAS, Equator Coffees and Teas is a small business in San Rafael that was founded by Brooke
McDonnell and Helen Russell in 1995; and
WHEREAS, the City of San Rafael supports Equator Coffees and Teas as a small business, a women
owned business, a LGBT owned business, and a B Corporation; and
WHEREAS, Equator Coffees. and Teas is a true small business success story — started in a garage, they
recently celebrated their 20°i year anniversary and they now employ 90 people; and
WHEREAS, not only does Equator Coffees and Teas produce award winning coffees, they exemplify a
good business that does good - Equator is a leader in corporate responsibility through environmental
sustainability and social justice programs throughout their supply chain with practices such as certified
organic coffees and fair trade agreements; and
WHEREAS, the City of San Rafael wants to recognize Equator Coffees and Teas for winning the
prestigious national award of `Small Business Person of the Year' from the United States Small Business
Administration.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Mayor and City Council of the City of San Rafael
express sincere appreciation for the contributions of Brooke, Helen, and all the Equator Team within the
City of San Rafael.
