CITY OF SAN RAFAEL
PRESENTS THIS
RESOLUTION OF APPRECIATION
TO
JOHN ORTEGA
WHEREAS, JOHN ORTEGA, has given his life to bring justice and equality to all who do not
have a voice; and
WHEREAS, John spends endless hours engaging his neighbors in cementing partnerships that
bridge sector, race and class divisions, mobilizing local creativity and resources to spark and
sustain positive change with in the Canal neighborhoods; and
WHEREAS, John was instrumental in planting the seeds for the grass roots organization, Canal
Human and Economic Development Association (CHEDA); and
WHEREAS, his commitment to community - inspired ideas and dialogue with the City has
sparked the Literacy Center at Pickleweed Park, the Canal Mercado and many other programs
and activities in the Canal neighborhoods; and
WHEREAS, John Ortega is a true community leader for the Canal Neighborhoods, as well as
all of San Rafael.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of San Rafael hereby
expresses their appreciation to JOHN ORTEGA for his untiring devotion to lend a voice to the
voiceless; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council congratulates Mr. Ortega for his well deserved
Marin County Human Rights Commission 1999 Martin Luther King, Jr., Humanitarian Award
and for being one of San Rafael's model leaders.
