p� RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN RAFAEL
COMMENDING THE MARIN LITERACY PROGRAM
AND THE MARIN SCHOOL VOLUNTEERS AND PROCLAIMING
SEPTEMBER 26TH TO OCTOBER 2ND AS MARIN LITERACY WEEK
N WHEREAS, the Marin Literacy Program, a joint program of the San Rafael Public Library and the
Marin County Free Library has, since 1985, offered adults the opportunity to improve their reading,
writing, and conversation skills thereby enabling them to secure employment, to provide for the
needs of their families, and to be functioning citizens of the community; and
WHEREAS, the Marin County School Volunteers, with the support of the Marin County Office of
Education since 1997, has trained and placed volunteers in the schools to enable students to gain the
basic skills of literacy; and
WHEREAS, these programs aim to continue to train and support volunteer tutors, to match tutors
with learners for instruction, to empower parents to become their child's first and most important
teacher, to assist schools in developing on-site volunteer programs, to develop cross-cultural
awareness that creates a sense of community, and to continue to make a difference in the lives of
children and adults by enabling students to become self -fulfilled, productive citizens who will make
learning a life-long process.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that that the City Council of the City of San Rafael
commends the Marin Literacy Program and the Marin County School Volunteers staff and affiliates
for their work on behalf of the residents of the County of Marin and declares the week of September
26th to October 2nd as Marin Literacy Week.

this .70-41 day of 1999 by the following vote:
