HARRY R. BARBIER
CORPORAL, SAN RAFAEL POLICE DEPARTMENT
WHEREAS, on October 19, 1992, Corporal Harry R. Barbier was on duty in a
San Rafael Police Department patrol unit when he heard a radio broadcast of an
armed robbery in a local convenience store; and
WHEREAS, Corporal Barbier heard Officer Clary advise that he was behind a
suspect vehicle heading into the east bay. Realizing he was the closest unit,
Corporal Barbier immediately took steps to assist Clary, overtaking him in
Emeryville as the four armed suspects fled west; and
WHEREAS, Corporal Barbier remained with Officer Clary as the suspects
attempted to evade arrest, eventually crashing and abandoning their vehicle and
immediately taking Barbier's unit under fire. Corporal Barbier unhesitatingly
directed his partner to close with the suspects even as his car was struck by
gunfire. Corporal Barbier immediately left the unit to pursue the suspects; and
WHEREAS, Corporal Barbier, believing his fellow officers to be in danger
displayed uncommon bravery in leaving a position of relative safety to engage
the suspects with his handgun while continuing to pursue them
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of San
Rafael, on behalf of its grateful residents, employees and businesses, and in
acknowledgment of Harry R. Barbier's exemplary conduct and heroism
expresses its sincerest appreciation for a job well done.
