A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
SAN RAFAEL PROCLAIMING THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 16TH
AS THE THIRTEENTH ANNUAL GREAT AMERICAN SMOKEOUT
WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society's Great American Smokeout
is a lightheated effort to encourage cigarette smokers to give up
their habit for 24 -hours in the hope that they will quit for good on
Thursday, November 16, 1989; and
WHEREAS, for twelve consecutive years, millions of smokers in-
cluding many in San Rafael, have participated in this event; and
WHEREAS, the health benefits of not smoking are substantiated
and well-known; and
WHEREAS, there are additional civic benefits such as a reduc-
tion of the risks of accidental fire and illnesses related to
"secondhand smoking".
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City of San Rafael
proclaims Thursday, November 16, 1989, as the day of the Great
American Smokeout in San Rafael, and in so doing urge all cigarette
smokers in the community to demonstrate to themselves and their
friends that they can quit smoking.
I, JEANNE M. LEONCINI, Clerk of the City of San Rafael,
hereby certify that the foregoing resolution was duly and regularly
introduced and adopted at a regular meeting of the Council of said
City on MONDAY , the 6TH day of NOVEMBER , 1989, by the
following vote, to wit:
