A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF SAN RAFAEL SUPPORTING THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA RIDGE TRAIL
WHEREAS, the Bay Area is a special place to live, in large
part because of the close interrelationship between cities and
the magnificent open landscape of the region; and
WHEREAS, the Bay Area Ridge Trail will be sited along the
ridgeline of the hills and mountains surrounding the Bay, going
through all nine Bay Area counties and the Santa Cruz Mountains
and offering an unparalleled opportunity to experience the region
from the highest elevations; and
WHEREAS, the trail will serve the needs of hikers, equestrians,
bicyclists, people with disabilities, joggers, families, and
many others; and
WHEREAS, the Bay Area can serve as a model for the nation
showing how a major metropolitan region can capitalize on its
most spectacular natural assets and bring to all its residents
the opportunity to hike and ride close to their homes on trails
and walkways.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of
the City of San Rafael supports the efforts of the public agencies,
trails groups, private sector institutions, and individuals
who are working through the Ridge Trail Council to bring this
trail into reality.
I, JEANNE M. LEONCINI, Clerk of the City of San Rafael,
hereby certify that the foregoing resolution was duly and regularly
introduced and adopted at a regular meeting of the City Council
of said City on TUESDAY „ the THIRD day of JANUARY 1989,
by the following vote, to wit:

VISTAS!
The San Francisco Bay Area Ridge Trail will offer recreation opportunities for hikers, bicyclists, equestrians and all
who enjoy a grand view!
The Bay Area Ridge Trail Corridor will:
Follow the ridges of the hills and mountains that circle the Bay. It will eventually stretch 300-400 miles through
the nine Bay Area counties.
's Be located within a one hour drive of the region's most heavily populated areas.
Offer parallel and alternative routes and special design features for bicyclists, equestrians, wheelchair users and
backcountry hikers.
Lead to spots of special environmental or cultural interest including panoramic views, meadows and
woodlands, unusual geological features, historic sites and camping areas.
Link nearby communities to a network of spur and loop trails that will connect many of the Bay Area's parks and
open space resources.
Include spur trails that will link to the Bay Trail which is being planned to circle the shoreline of the San
Francisco Bay.
Much of the Ridge Trail Already Exists...
The Ridge Trail will traverse public lands and existing
easements to the maximum extent possible. Sections of
the Ridge Trail already exist along the ridges in Golden
Gate National Recreation Area, Marin Open Space
District, Greater Vallejo Recreation and Park District,
East Bay Regional Park District, California State Parks,
Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District, and Santa
Clara and San Mateo County parks.
