HomeMy WebLinkAboutCC Resolution 7673 (Sister City - San Rafael Del Norte, Nicaragua)RESOLUTION NO. 7673 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN RAFAEL APPROVING A SISTER CITY RELATIONSHIP WITH THE PEOPLES OF SAN RAFAEL, CALIFORNIA AND SAN RAFAEL DEL NORTE, NICARAGUA WHEREAS, more than 815 United States cities, representing over 90 million Americans, have established international Sister City relationships with some 1,100 communities in 85 other nations of the world, in order to learn more about each other and to develop lasting and meaningful exchanges of people, ideas and culture on a long-term basis; and WHEREAS, more than 175 cities and towns in California currently have Sister City relationships throughout the world; and WHEREAS, more than 100 cities and states throughout the United States presently have official Sister City or Sister State relationships with communities in the Central American nation of Nicaragua; and WHEREAS, the town of San Rafael del Norte, Nicaragua, located in the north -central area of the country in the province of Jinotega, and the City of San Rafael, California have much in common; they are both non -urban, non -industrial communities of approximately the same size - San Rafael del Norte's population is over 30,000; they are both situated at the foot of a scenic mountain in rolling hills and verdant valleys of areas known throughout the world for their natural splendor and beauty; they have both developed over the past centuries from early Spanish missions, which are exemplified by their respective mission churches and their predominant architectural influence; and they both embrace creativity and community of spirit in improving the lives of their citizens; and WHEREAS, contacts, agreements and a relationship already exist between San Rafael del Norte and San Rafael, California. A resident from San Rafael has visited San Rafael del Norte as the guest of its mayor, Senora Norma Herrera Zeledon, delivered a donation of educational materials, and returned with a letter of greetings to the Mayor of San Rafael, Lawrence Mulryan; children from both communities have begun to exchange letters and drawings; cultural and educational activities have been held locally, resulting from these contacts; and WHEREAS, the people of San Rafael have a commitment to the active pursuit of world peace through grassroots people -to -people and city -to -city friendship and cultural exchange; and WHEREAS, the San Rafael del Corazon ("from the heart") Sister City Project, a voluntary citizen effort, was initiated by residents of San Rafael and is supported by this community; and WHEREAS, the City of San Rafael and its residents will benefit from this relationship in many ways, including opportunities for citizens of all ages to learn about another community and culture, and to teach about their own community and culture. WHEREAS, the City of San Rafael in adopting this resolution does so in the spirit of building friendly relations between the Peoples of San Rafael, California and San Rafael Del Norte, not as a political statement between the two cities or any members of the San Rafael City Council. r, (j (� 11 7673 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the people and the City of San Rafael declare themselves to be a Sister City with the people and the town of San Rafael del Norte, Nicaragua - and pledge their commitment to establish and maintain a friendly, enduring, and productive Sister City relationship. I, JEANNE M.
