HomeMy WebLinkAboutCC Resolution 7063 (Public Mass Transportation)RESOLUTION NO. 7063 A RESOLUTION OF THE SAN RAFAEL CITY COUNCIL REQUESTING CONTINUATION OF FEDERAL TRANSIT SUBVENTIONS FOR PUBLIC MASS TRANSPORTATION. WHEREAS, it has come to the attention of the City of San Rafael that the Federal Government intends to severely reduce its financial support of public mass transportation; and WHEREAS, adequate financial support from the Federal Government is needed to sustain existing public mass transportation; and WHEREAS, public mass transportation serves to reduce air pollution and automobile congestion on Marin County public thoroughfares, and WHEREAS, public mass transportation provides essential mobility to Marin County's elderly, handicapped, low income and youth; and WHEREAS, public mass transportation provides public benefits to the entire Bay Area region by reducing dependence on private vehicles by travelers; and WHEREAS, currently over $2 million of Federal subventions are contributed to public mass transportation in Marin County; and WHEREAS, these Federal funds are vitally needed to fund the existing transportation system and any curtailment will result in severe cutbacks in the level of service available; and WHEREAS, Federal subventions provide 50% of the operating costs for rural West Marin transit services to youth and the elderly; and WHEREAS, no alternative source for replacement of these Federal subventions currently exists. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City of San Rafael requests that the Federal Government retain the current level of financial support of public mass transportation. I, JEANNE M.
