HomeMy WebLinkAboutCC Resolution 6713 (Community College Tuition System)RESOLUTION NO. 6713 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN RAFAEL URGING THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A REASONABLE SYSTEM OF FEES AND TUITION FOR THE COMMUNITY COLLEGES WHEREAS, the Marin Community Colleges serve 24,000 credit and non-credit students; and WHEREAS, many of these students are un- or underemployed adults, single parents, older adults or disabled students; and WHEREAS, the colleges emphasize occupational training, transfer curricula, basic skills, and second career training; and WHEREAS, lack of adequate state funding has created a fiscal crisis; and WHEREAS, this crisis will disrupt many students' education; and WHEREAS, there is no alternate educational institution in Marin in which students can enroll; and WHEREAS, there exists some $108 million dollars in state funds designated for community colleges; and WHEREAS, a reasonable system of fees and tuition should be charged; and WHEREAS, $10 million dollars has been set aside for scholarships for those who cannot afford said fees; and WHEREAS, there is a projected state surplus at the end of the current fiscal year. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of San Rafael urges Speaker Brown and Governor Deukmejian to take leadership in seeing that state funding is restored to community colleges now. I, JEANNE M.
