HomeMy WebLinkAboutCC Resolution 6829 (Literary Programming & Capital Impr)RESOLUTION NO. 6829 RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN RAFAEL AUTHORIZING STAFF TO APPLY FOR FUNDS FROM THE SAN FRANCISCO FOUNDATION FOR LITERARY PROGRAMMING AND CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS AT FALKIRK WHEREAS, the Falkirk Community Cultural Center was established to provide a broad range of cultural activities for the public; and WHEREAS, Falkirk is a unique facility to provide literary programs such as a small press bookshop, and an artists -in -residence program; and WHEREAS, such programs are consistent with the City's original goals for Falkirk; and WHEREAS, the San Francisco Foundation makes funds available for such pro- grams through the Leonard and Beryl Buck Trust. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of San Rafael hereby authorizes staff to apply for funds from the San Francisco Foundation for literary programming and capital improvements at Falkirk. I, JEANNE M. LEONCINI, City Clerk of the City of San Rafael, hereby certify that the foregoing resolution wad duly and regularly introduced and adopted at a REGULAR meeting of the City Council of said City held on MONDAYthe 4TH day of JUNE , 1984, by the following vote, to wit: AYES: COUNC I LMEMBERS: BREINER, FRUGOLI, NAVE, RUSSOM & MAYOR MULRYAN NOES: COUNC I LMEMBERS: None ABSENT: COUNCILMEMBERS: None ANNE ---K. LEONCINI, City Clerk FALKIRK GRANT APPLICATIONS TU THE SAN FRANCISCO FOUNDATION f.'la. -11 Is go �� : Small windowless room between galleries and offices - referred to as "Bride's Roan" Proposal: The roan to be used for a small -press bookshop and victorian literature reading room, as well as office space for the Marin Poetry Center. This necessitates minor restoration and installation of shelves. Request: Capital DTprovement funds to wallpaper the room and install shelves, replace existing side door with victorian glass door for additional light source. A desk, and phone installation. Programming funds: Seed money for initial book purchase. Staff money for bookstore coordinator for beginning of project. THIRD FLOOR - Entire Proposal: The entire third floor be used for a �rriters'/artists'-in-residence program. Three bedrooms used for living quarters on a temporary basis. Use of third floor has been limited to storage only. No restoration work begun. Request: Capital Improvements: To include legal stair access (estimated at $25,000), to restore and clean up. Re -install existing sink. Three electric typewriters. Match for restoration is possible -tram National Trust of Historic Preservation. Programming: Funds to initiate national search for qualified artists, stipend monies, staff coordinator. PATH HOUSE - Existing structure behind pool - two rocros plus bathroom Proposal: To use this building as a print shop, to house donated 1917 letterpress, which does not tit into main building. It will be used for classes and by -the -hour rental. Machine is fully functional. Request: Capital Improvements: To reconstruct the building (new roof, repair floor and walls, concrete slab under press)..Install press through south Beall. Programming: Funds for letterpress instructor, publicity, staff coordinator. NOTE: Programming is funded 100%, Capital Improvements are 50% matching. Letters of intent are not necessary. Falkirk has received the go-ahead from the Foundation already.
