A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF SAN RAFAEL APPROVING A SIGN ADJUSTMENT FOR A
FREESTANDING SIGN FOR CENTRAL MARIN ANSWERING
SERVICE AT 1108 IRWIN STREET
WHEREAS, the San Rafael Sign Ordinance specifies that
a freestanding sign is allowed only when property has 100'
or more of frontage (14.12.020 D 4); and
WHEREAS, on September 29, 1981, the Planning Com-
mission reviewed the above application and determined that
there were no special circumstances for granting an adjust -
went to allow a freestanding sign on a 50' wide lot; and
WHEREAS, on October 19, 1981, the San Rafael City
Council held a duly noticed public hearing on the appeal of the
Planning Commission decision receiving staff and Commission
information and receiving testimony.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the San Rafael
City Council grants a sign adjustment to allow a freestanding
sign on a 50' wide lot, not to exceed 2' x 5 1/2' in size.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the San Rafael City
Council approved said sign adjustment with the following
findings of fact as required under Section 14.12.060(D) of
the San Rafael Municipal Code:
A) There are exceptional or extraordinary cir-
cumstances applying to the building that do not apply to
other buildings in the area.
1. The architecture of the structure with the
projecting front stairway inhibits visibility of a con-
ventional wall sign along the one-way street.
2. The location and size of the windows along the
frontage of the building prohibits placement of a wall sign
of adequate size.
B. The granting of the variance will not adversely
affect adjacent or vicinity properties, or the health and/or
safety of the public.

hereby certify that the foregoing resolution was duly and regularly
introduced and adopted at a regular meeting of the Council of said
City on Monday , the 2nd day of November , 1981, by the following
