A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF SAN RAFAEL URGING ALLOCATION OF FEDERAL
FUNDS FOR DREDGING OF SAN RAFAEL CREEK
WHEREAS, the San Francisco District of the U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers has scheduled maintenance dredging of the San Rafael Creek in its
Final Composite Environmental Statement for Maintenance Dredging of Federal
Navigation Projects in the San Francisco Bay Region for the fiscal year 1976/
1977; and
WHEREAS, it is imperative that this specific project receive top
priority and not be delayed, but commenced and completed in the winter of
1976; and
WHEREAS, an urgent request is made based upon the excessive
accumulation of silt, mud and debris within this vital waterway, causing
numerous vessels to be grounded upon the channel bottom resulting in expen-
sive damage to many small craft; and
WHEREAS, the siltation from Marin County hillsides and tidal
actions of San Pablo Bay into this shallow channel adds a flooding hazard
during the winter months, endangering many homes and businesses which are
located along both shores and in the surrounding areas; and
WHEREAS, the safety and movement of recreational boaters, as
well as the welfare of allied industries along the channel, is so dependent
upon the dredging and maintenance of this navigable waterway;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the
City of San Rafael strongly urges Congressman John L. Burton, as well as
Senators Alan Cranston and John V. Tunney, to make every effort to support
the appropriation of Federal funds for the early scheduling of the maintenance
dredging project for San Rafael Creek in 1976.
