Boro, Mayor San Rafael City Council Paul M. Cohen, Vice-Mayor Cyr N. Miller, Councilmember Gary O. Phillips, Councilmember Absent: Councilmember Barbara Heller Also Present: Jeanne M. Leoncini, City Clerk 1. RESOLUTION IN MEMORY OF LAUREN CATUZZI GRANDCOLAS WHO PERISHED ON UNITED AIRLINES FLIGHT 93 ON SEPTEMBER 11, 2001 (CM) – FILE 109 x 102 Mayor Boro stated that Lauren Catuzzi Grandcolas of San Rafael, the victim of a terrorist attack on United Flight 93 on September 11, 2001, was born in Bloomington, Indiana, and was a graduate of Stafford High School in Houston, Texas and the University of Texas in Austin. He indicated that she and her husband Jack were married on June 15, 1991. Lauren worked as a Marketing Director for the Law Firm of Thelin, Marin, Johnson and Bridges and in a similar capacity for the Accounting Firm Price Waterhouse. He explained that most recently, Lauren had been working for Good Housekeeping Magazine and was collaborating with a publisher on a book idea related to women’s lifestyle achievements, aimed at boosting the self-esteem and self-confidence of women specifically, and adult behavior in general. Mayor Boro stated this non-fiction work was a long-term goal and a source of great pride for her, reporting that Lauren’s book would be completed by her family, with all proceeds going to the Lauren Grandcolas Foundation, established in her memory. He stated that the Foundation would distribute 100% of the proceeds to support charitable causes. Mayor Boro stated that just some weeks ago, a donation of $50,000 was made to Marin General Hospital to sponsor a “Birthing Room” in the Obstetric Care Ward, in Lauren’s honor and memory. He indicated this was especially fitting since Lauren was two months pregnant at the time of her death. Mayor Boro stated that Lauren loved life and lived it to the fullest. She was strong in her beliefs and courageous to the end. He indicated her message from Flight 93 to her husband and family was strong, calm, loving and unafraid and she showed incredible strength, commitment, conviction and control. Her selflessness and caring nature towards other people knew no bounds and was demonstrated during the final moments of eminent peril. Mayor Boro stated that the place to be dedicated this evening was one she frequently visited and with the dedication, her brave deeds, courageous death and love of life would always be present. Councilmember Cohen moved and Councilmember Phillips seconded, to adopt the resolution. RESOLUTION NO. 11170 - RESOLUTION IN MEMORY OF LAUREN CATUZZI GRANDCOLAS WHO PERISHED ON UNITED AIRLINES FLIGHT 93 ON SEPTEMBER 11, 2001 AYES: COUNCILMEMBERS: Cohen, Miller, Phillips and Mayor Boro NOES: COUNCILMEMBERS: None ABSENT: COUNCILMEMBERS: Heller Resolution was then presented to husband Jack Grandcolas, who stated he was deeply touched. SPECIAL PRESENTATION: 2. DEDICATION OF COURT STREET MALL ACROSS FROM THE SAN RAFAEL CITY PLAZA AS LAUREN PLACE IN MEMORY OF LAUREN CATUZZI GRANDCOLAS WHO PERISHED ON UNITED AIRLINES FLIGHT 93 ON SEPTEMBER 11, 2001 (CM) – FILE 109 x 102 Dedication ceremony was held in memory of Lauren Catuzzi Grandcolas with the unveiling of a bronze plaque. Jack Grandcolas again thanked the City Council, stating it was an uplifting and fitting tribute to his wife.
