3. REPORT ON PLAZA SUBCOMMITTEE'S OUTDOOR FURNITURE TRIAL FOR THE SAN RAFAEL
CITY PLAZA (RA) — FILE R-423 x R-140#8
Economic Development Director Nancy Mackle reported that the Downtown Business Improvement
District (BID) having expressed how much they liked the Plaza, addressed how it could be enhanced
and have more seating areas for those not necessarily eating at the restaurants inside. Subsequent to
looking at brochures for furniture, Ms. Mackle stated that a meeting was set up with the Agency Board
Subcommittee (Chairman Boro and Member Phillips), and the BID to discuss additional furniture, and
the idea generated was that it be a trial period, through September. The merchants in the Plaza
agreed to take the furniture indoors at night, relieving the City of the additional burden of taking care of
the furniture or keeping it clean.

Ms. Mackle stated that the Redevelopment Agency would purchase the furniture, which would consist of
three tables, surrounded by chairs, and umbrellas for shade, to be located along the western portion of
the Plaza, where the benches are presently situated. She indicated that the trial period would afford the
opportunity of jointly assessing the use of the furniture, maintenance, nightly removal and location. Ms.
Mackle stated that the subcommittee would continue with the BID to select the actual furniture.
Member Miller moved and Member Cohen seconded, to accept the report.
