HomeMy WebLinkAboutCC Resolution 14012 (Support Litquake)RESOLUTION NO. 14012 RESOLUTION OF THE SAN RAFAEL CITY COUNCIL SUPPORTING `LITQUAKE SAN RAFAEL' AN ALL -DAY DOWNTOWN LIT -WALK ON OCTOBER 11TH WHEREAS, Downtown is located in the center of San Rafael and it serves as the `heart and soul' of the community; WHEREAS, San Rafael's literary culture is an integral part of our city, supported year round by the San Rafael City Library, Friends Books (supporting the San Rafael Library), Rebound Bookstore, Copperfield's Books, Open Secret Bookstore, the Marin Poetry Center; and other San Rafael stores and venues; and WHEREAS, Litquake SF is celebrating its 16`h anniversary and has become the West Coast's most daring, innovative, and exciting literary festival; and WHEREAS, Litquake seeks to foster interest in literature for people of all ages, perpetuate a sense of literary community, and provide a vibrant forum for Bay Area writers; and WHEREAS, On October 11th, 2015, the entire Fourth Street corridor in Downtown San Rafael will be the location for `Litquake San Rafael'; and WHEREAS, Litquake San Rafael is co-sponsored by the Downtown San Rafael Business Improvement District, Marin Poetry Center, Friends of the San Rafael Library, Marin Independent Journal, First Bank of San Rafael, and Rebound Bookstore; and WHEREAS, Multiple downtown locations will host Litquake visitors, including the City Plaza, Rebound Bookstore, San Rafael Library, Copperfield's Books, Blue Moon Comics, Willow Hair Salon, Friends Books, Lotus Chaat & Spices, Thai Aroi Dee, Open Secret Bookstore, Art Works Downtown, Riley Street Art Supply, Gamescape North, Pleasures of the Heart, West End Cafe, Prooflab, and Theresa and Johnny's Comfort Food; and WHEREAS, Authors will read their work across genres including science fiction, travel stories, new works, young adult, relationships, poetry, open mics, and cooking; and WHEREAS, this event in Downtown San Rafael will bring authors and the community together for an entire day to celebrate literature and literary culture. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council hereby supports `Litquake San Rafael' in Downtown San Rafael to celebrate the richness of the Bay Area Literary community and introduce Downtown San Rafael to a broad literary audience. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Council encourages residents and visitors to explore the unique retail, restaurants, and service businesses located in the Downtown before, during, and after the `Litquake San Rafael' event. I, ESTHER C.
