HomeMy WebLinkAboutCC Resolution 14022 (Appreciation DV Awareness Month)RESOLUTION 14022 CITY OF SAN RAFAE L PRESENTSTHIS RE50I,UTION OE 11PPRECIftT10N TO DECLARE OCTOBER AS "DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH" WHEREAS, domestic violence, due to the nature and severity of the crime and the effects on our community, is one of the highest priority crimes for law enforcement in San Rafael and Marin County; and WHEREAS, more reporting has taken place over the years as this crime has become the focus of public awareness due in part to organizations like the Center for Domestic Peace and requires that resources from government agencies and community organizations respond, investigate and manage these serious incidents; and WHEREAS, domestic violence is a complex and significant crime that was reported to Marin County agencies in 2014 at a rate of approximately 2.2 a day or 787 incidents that year, requiring effective prevention and intervention strategies to address it, and requires coordination among many sectors of the community including housing assistance, legal services, job training, family strengthening organizations, health care services, education, child and family welfare, employers, faith based organizations, criminal justice and court agencies and domestic violence organizations; and WHEREAS, the Center for Domestic Peace helped over 4,200 individuals last year including responding to 3,409 hotline calls, holding 1,457 advocacy sessions, helping victims with legal proceedings such as obtaining restraining orders and police reports and providing emergency and transitional housing to 98 women and 144 children; and WHEREAS, the San Rafael Police Department has designated a Law Enforcement Domestic Violence Liaison working with organizations like the Center for Domestic Peace, the Marin County Coordinated Community Response to Domestic Violence Network, and the Marin County Family Violence Consortium; and WHEREAS, the City of San Rafael is resolved to address domestic violence in Marin County by directing policy towards these ends. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Mayor and City Council designate October as "Domestic Violence Awareness Month" and call on the community to work together to help change the attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors that condone and perpetuate domestic violence. The City of San Rafael calls on local agencies to continue their cooperative efforts to the fullest extent to address and prevent domestic violence inASan I el and Marin County. MAYOR
