TO
JIM SCHUTZ
WHEREAS, Jim Schutz has received the John H. Nail Memorial Award as an outstanding municipal employee
who has contributed significantly to San Rafael's governance and to the advancement of the
community as a whole; and
WHEREAS, Jim's calm demeanor, sharp wit, analytic mind, keen perspective and ability to see the big picture
make him a great mentor, team player and leader; and
WHEREAS, Jim works tirelessly for the community to make San Rafael a safer, more sustainable, better
prepared and financially sound run city; and
WHEREAS, Jim's empathetic leadership style has enhanced collaboration with San Rafael's residents,
neighborhood groups, regional and partner agencies, the environmental community and City
employees; and
WHEREAS, Jim has initiated numerous programs during his time with San Rafael, among them spearheading
the City's zero waste goals, pragmatically working towards pension reform, developing an
innovative Recession Action Plan, graciously acting as the City's lead labor negotiator, creating
shared services agreements, all while effortlessly overseeing 32 employees; and
WHEREAS, in addition to his hard work for the City, Jim finds time to coach his son's Little League team, to
build a garden for his children's school with his wife, and dashes off obscure articles of great
intellect; and
WHEREAS, Jim, a renowned foodie and gastronome, was recently rumored to consume both a celery stalk and
a carrot stick for lunch, although indisputable evidence of such overindulgence has not yet been
unearthed; and
WHEREAS, ultimately, the City of San Rafael and its residents are the beneficiaries of this dedicated,
compassionate, intelligent and annoyingly healthy Assistant City Manager.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Mayor and City Council of the City of San Rafael hereby
express their profound gratitude to Jim Schutz for his years of service on behalf of the people who live and work in
San Rafael, City staff .the May Council members and look forward to many, many more.
