DAVIS, Ph.D. WHEREAS, Matt Davis has been a Professor in the Psychology Department at the Dominican University of California since 1994; and WHEREAS, Professor Davis completed his doctoral work in Social Ecology, with a focus on both Social Psychology and on the geological processes that create earthquakes and volcanoes; and WHEREAS, Professor Davis regularly teaches a course titled Natural Disasters: Societal & Individual Reactions to Risk and his nickname on campus is "Disasterman"; and WHEREAS, Professor Davis has completed two large-scale research projects on public awareness of volcanic hazards in the vicinity of Mt. Vesuvius in Italy, as well as studies of risk perception for volcanic hazards at Mt. Rainier, Washington, and tsunami hazards along the Northern California coast; and WHEREAS, Professor Davis most recently led research studies evaluating the psychological effects of participating in both the Get Ready Marin and CERT disaster preparedness programs; and WHEREAS, Professor Davis' studies have led to the update and enhancement of the Get Ready Marin program and were instrumental in the development of the new Marin County CERT program; and WHEREAS, Professor Davis is a recent graduate of the CERT program, has encouraged his students to also attend CERT training, and regularly works with City staff to evaluate and enhance our public safety disaster preparedness programs; and WHEREAS, Professor Davis is committed, engaging, and passionate to understanding human behavior in disasters and has been instrumental in supporting our community's culture of disaster preparedness and overall disaster resilience. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Mayor and City Council of the City of San Rafael hereby commend Professor Matt Davis for his outstanding efforts, contributions and support in the evaluation and enhancement of San Rafael *s emergency preparedness programs on behalf of the City of San Rafael.
