HomeMy WebLinkAboutCC Resolution 12648 (Carnegie Library)RESOLUTION NO. 12648 ?CC AGENDA ITEM #3 2/2/2009 +n City of San 1R fael ~Wgso[ution~ 1 COG VYZING �E CAI�EGIE LIBRXR2'CYE9V9E"7AL %,Y1TgZM, the existence of a free pu6fic Ci6rary is a hallmarkof our democratic society, signing a commitment 6y the entire community to a levelplaying fi'eldforallin access to information, knowledge, and wisdom, and WREP,q7S, the members of the Women's Christian Temperance Vnion early on saw the needfora free Ci6rary in San Rafael, founding such an institution in 1887; and %,XERW, the coffee house and reading room they foundedsoon grew to 6e em6raced 6y the young City of San Rafae(, andfoundthe needfor largerandmore permanent quarters; and ` NTP,M, the present location of our San RgfaerPu6ric Li6rary was first opened to the pu6ric 100 years ago, inYanuary 1909, the result of a grant fromAndrew Carnegie in the amount of $25, 000 for construction anda city-wide fundraising effort to purchase the land at the corner of 5th Avenue and E Street, and ` *' aUAS, the 5,000 square foot 6uilding was added to in 1960, dou6ling its size, and then again remodeled in 1973 to gain further space, and WIMREAS, the Li6rary underwent seismic upgrades in 1993 and received a $1.3 million renovation for basic nnfi-rastructure in 2007; and 1+YERf,AS, more remains to 6e done in order to assure adequate facilities and continuedfree access to 600ks, recordings, anddigitalresourcesfor the next 100years.
