TO
MARIN LITERACY PROGRAM
PROCLAIMING MARIN LITERACY MONTH SEPTEMBER 2008—
WHEREAS,

WHEREAS, since 1985, the Marin Literacy Program, a joint program of the San Rafael
Public Library and the Marin County Free Library, has offered adults the
opportunity to improve their reading, writing and conversation skills
thereby enabling them to secure employment, to provide for the needs of
their families and to be functioning citizens of the community; and
WHEREAS, the Marin Literacy Program aims to continue to train and support
volunteer tutors, to match tutors with learners for instruction, to empower
parents to become their child's first and most important teacher, to provide
the County Jail and San Quentin State Prison with on-site literacy
programs, to serve isolated families of children under five with school
readiness activities through the FLAGship mobile unit, and to provide
instruction to adults throughout San Rafael and Marin County through
one-on-one and small group tutoring; and
WHEREAS, the Marin Literacy Program is proud of being able to develop cross-
cultural awareness that creates a sense of community, and continues to
make a difference in the lives of children and adults by enabling students
to become self -fulfilled, productive citizens who will make learning a life-
long process.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Mayor and City Council of the City of
San Rafael hereby designate the month of September 2008 as "Marin Literacy Month" and joins
in observing the month with appropriate activities.
