HomeMy WebLinkAboutCC Resolution 11937 (Support Proposition 81)RESOLUTION NO 11937 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN RAFAEL SUPPORTING PROPOSITION 81, THE 2006 CALIFORNIA STATE LIBRARY CONSTRUCTION BOND WHEREAS, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has authorized the California Reading and Literacy Improvement and Public Library Construction and Renovation Bond Act of 2006 be placed on the June 2006 ballot; and WHEREAS, population increases have resulted in increasing library usage, and local governments are struggling to meet the need for library construction and renovation; and WHEREAS, the California State Library has identified over 500 unfunded library construction projects statewide, totaling more than $4 billion; and WHEREAS, approval of Proposition 81 would authorize the State of California to sell $600 million in bonds to assist local governments in the construction and renovation of public libraries; and WHEREAS, approved projects will combine state matching funds representing 65% of total project costs, with 35% in locally generated funds, resulting in nearly $900 million being spent in local communities; and WHEREAS, public libraries offer reading programs for young children and literacy services for adults and families that complement the formal education system; and WHEREAS, the San Rafael Public Library has benefited from the previous Library Construction Bond in its Pickleweed Library expansion; and WHEREAS, the City of San Rafael may benefit from the Proposition 81 Library Bond funds as well. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of San Rafael, California, supports Proposition 81 on the June 2006 ballot. I, JEANNE M.
