RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN RAFAEL URGING
COMCAST CABLE TO RESTORE FM SERVICES TO ITS SUBSCRIBERS IN SAN RAFAEL
WHEREAS, the cable television franchise operators in Marin County, recognizing the unique
topographic challenges presented by the hilly terrain of our county, have continuously provided FM radio
service as part of the basic cable service for the last twenty years; and
WHEREAS, without that service, many residents of San Rafael are unable to receive clear, and in some
instances any, reception of FM radio broadcasts; and
WHEREAS, FM radio service is vital in providing locally produced public affairs programming, news,
cultural programming music, traffic reports and emergency broadcast information; and
WHEREAS, many cable subscribers rely on the FM cable service for the majority of their informational
and entertainment needs; and
WHEREAS, the recent decision to terminate FM cable service was made without advising the local
franchising authority, the Marin Telecommunications Agency; and
WHEREAS, the Marin Telecommunications Agency has made a formal objection about the decision to
terminate cable FM service; and
WHEREAS, without these services San Rafael residents will suffer a loss of connection with their
community and may not be able to build antennas or otherwise compensate for the loss of the service
through any other means.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of San Rafael supports the
resumption of FM cable service which has been provided for the last nineteen years to Marin County
cable subscribers; and
