HomeMy WebLinkAboutCC Resolution 11716 (Reform FM Services)RESOLUTION NO. 11716 RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN RAFAEL URGING COMCAST CABLE TO RESTORE FM SERVICES TO ITS SUBSCRIBERS IN SAN RAFAEL WHEREAS, the cable television franchise operators in Marin County, recognizing the unique topographic challenges presented by the hilly terrain of our county, have continuously provided FM radio service as part of the basic cable service for the last twenty years; and WHEREAS, without that service, many residents of San Rafael are unable to receive clear, and in some instances any, reception of FM radio broadcasts; and WHEREAS, FM radio service is vital in providing locally produced public affairs programming, news, cultural programming music, traffic reports and emergency broadcast information; and WHEREAS, many cable subscribers rely on the FM cable service for the majority of their informational and entertainment needs; and WHEREAS, the recent decision to terminate FM cable service was made without advising the local franchising authority, the Marin Telecommunications Agency; and WHEREAS, the Marin Telecommunications Agency has made a formal objection about the decision to terminate cable FM service; and WHEREAS, without these services San Rafael residents will suffer a loss of connection with their community and may not be able to build antennas or otherwise compensate for the loss of the service through any other means. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of San Rafael supports the resumption of FM cable service which has been provided for the last nineteen years to Marin County cable subscribers; and Be It Further Resolved, that the Council hereby directs the City Clerk to send a copy of this resolution to the Marin Telecommunications Agency; Comcast Corporation, Senator Boxer, Senator Feinstein, Representative Woolsey, State Senator Migden and Assembly Member Nation.
