PRESENTS THIS
RESOLUTION OF APPRECIATION
TO
JOHN ALDEN
San Rafael Planning Commissioner
WHEREAS, John Alden was appointed to the San Rafael Planning Commission on June 4,
2001, and has served on the Planning Commission for four years; and
WHEREAS, John served as Chair of the Planning Commission from 2003-2004, during
which time the Commission held eleven public hearings on the Draft General Plan 2020.
John presided over 21 regular meetings of the Planning Commission as Chair; and
WHEREAS, during his tenure the Planning Commission reviewed many important projects
which will positively impact the City for many decades including Redwood Village, Chapel
Cove, the Alma Via and Aldersley assisted living projects, the Lofts at Albert Park, the
conversion of the El Camino Building, Lincoln Mews, the McInnis Apartments, the Fasken
office project, 4300 Redwood Highway, 171-181 Third Street, rehabilitation of the San
Rafael Improvement Club building, upgrades to the Marin Academy campus, expansion of
the Pickleweed Community Center and the Loch Lomond Marina Village, as well as
countless variances, exceptions and use permits; and
WHEREAS, during his tenure the Planning Commission also reviewed numerous ordinance
upgrades, including a rewrite of the Noise Ordinance, the Sign Ordinance, the Subdivision
Ordinance, the Telecommunications Ordinance, Second Unit Regulations, the Vessel
Sanitation and Dock Safety Ordinance, the Public Hearing Notification revisions and the
Single Family Design Review modifications; and
WHEREAS, John's participation on the Planning Commission was characterized by a
strong work ethic and understanding of issues before him, and an interest in responding to
concerns of the public and communicating the basis for decisions to members of the public;
THEREFORE, LET IT BE RESOLVED that the Mayor and City Council of the City of
San Rafael hereby extend their sincere appreciation for the contribution John has made to the
betterment of the Community and its residents.
