Candy Friesen
WHEREAS, Candy Friesen has just completed a five-year commitment to write a monthly
column on "Library News" for the San Rafael/Terra Linda News Pointer that has created broad
interest and awareness in the community about the Library's programs and services. By
applying her expertise in publicity Candy also has promoted the Library through creating news
releases, signs, the Friends newsletter, and Library note cards and postcards; and
WHEREAS, Candy has been a San Rafael library user for 49 years and an active member of
the Friends of the San Rafael Public Library Board for ten years, including a term as President
of the organization in 2000-2001. During her tenure as president of the Friends, she created an
efficient workspace in the Library office with new furniture as well as a computer, scanner, and
printer and a separate phone line for the Friends. Candy and her husband Howard spent a
Sunday assembling the new furniture at the Library; and
WHEREAS, she has applied her time, talent, and energy to improve the Friends' sales of
donated books, especially lobby sales, through her organizational skills and use of the Internet
for pricing valuable items. Candy designed and coordinated the successful fund drive to replace
the Library's furniture in 1996. She has worked closely with the Friends volunteer coordinators
to upgrade and improve the Friends' data bases of members and donors; and
WHEREAS, because of her personal interest in art history, Candy worked with library staff to
broaden the appeal of the First Wednesday Art Lectures and to publicize the lectures to attract
a larger audience.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Mayor and City Council hereby express
sincere appreciation and gratitude to Candy Friesen for her substantial contributions towards
the betterment of the San Rafael Public Library through her dedication and involvement with the
Friends of the San Rafael Public Library
