PRESENTS THIS

TO
CALIFORNIA FILM INSTITUTE
ON THE FIFTH ANNIVERSARY
OF THE
CHRISTOPHER B. SMITH RAFAEL FILM CENTER
WHEREAS, The California Film Institute, after 7 years of discussion, negotiation, fundraising
and construction, held the grand opening celebrations of the Christopher B.
Smith Rafael Film Center from April 16 through April 18, 1999; and
WHEREAS, The Center retained the historic Art Deco character and appearance of the
Orpheus Theater and thoughtfully and gracefully added the latest technological
advances in sound systems and viewing; and
WHEREAS, From its opening day, the Christopher B. Smith Rafael Film Center provided a
world class forum for the greatest talents in the filmmaking industry to share
their art and ideas; and
WHEREAS, The Christopher B. Smith Rafael Film Center is a major player in the efforts to
achieve the community's "Vision of Downtown San Rafael" and to revitalize
Downtown; and
WHEREAS, The Christopher B. Smith Rafael Film Center has benefited the cultural,
educational and economic life of San Rafael and all of the Bay Area.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Mayor and City Council of the City of San
Rafael hereby present this resolution of appreciation to the California Film Institute in celebration
of the successful five years of operation of the Christopher B. Smith Rafael Film Center and
express sincere appreciation for the efforts involved in making the Center a resounding success,
and look forward to many more years of entertainment.
