Emcigarelles are Toxic
• E -liquid forms an aerosol when heated, not just a
"harmless water vapor"
• This aerosol contains nicotine, toxins and ultrafine
particles that are inhaled and trapped in the lungs
• It also contains 10 chemicals listed on CA's Proposition
65 list of chemicals that cause cancer, birth defects and
reproductive harm
• Chemicals from the aerosol are absorbed by the blood
stream and delivered to the brain and other organs

Secondhand Aerosol
• E -cigarettes also harm those exposed to the secondhand
aerosol
• People exposed absorb nicotine at comparable levels to
secondhand smoke from cigarettes
• Secondhand aerosol contains
ultrafine particles that may:
• Cause cancer
• Cause birth defects
• Cause other reproductive harms

But is nicotine really that had?
• Nicotine is more addictive than heroin and cocaine
• It raises blood pressure and pulse and constricts blood
vessels, which may increase the risk of heart attack
• Can harm brain development in adolescence and
predispose future tobacco use

EmCigarelles Do Not Help
Smokers Quit
• No scientific evidence that e -cigarettes help smokers to
quit cigarettes or reduce consumption
• E -cigarette users are no more likely to quit smoking than
regular smokers
• One study showed that 89% of e -cigarette users are still
using them 1 year later
• Most users are dual users (cigarette and e -cigarette)
• Continuing to smoke traditional cigarettes does not reduce
cardiovascular health risks

products are attractive to youth

Rise in Youth Use
• From 2013-2014, use of e -rigs more than tripled for students
grades 6-12 nationally. National Youth Tobacco Survey shows
an increase from 4.5% to 13.4% for High School Youth.
• Adolescents who use e -cigarettes are more likely to become
established cigarette smokers than non-users
• Studies suggest that youth who may have otherwise never
smoked cigarettes are becoming addicted to nicotine through
e -cigarettes

Rise in Young Adult Use
• In California: adult e -cigarette use in the past
30 days doubled from 2012-2013
• For California young adults (18-29) e -cigarette use
tripled in one year
• California young adults are 3x more likely to use
e -cigarettes than those 30+
• Nearly 20% of California young adult e -cigarette users
have never smoked cigarettes

In Conclusion
• E -cigarettes are a public health concern
• They are not proven to help smokers quit smoking
• Use by youth and adults has risen dramatically
• They emit a dangerous aerosol and other toxins
• They contain nicotine and are addicting
