Agenda Item No: 13 Meeting Date: June 16, 2008 SAN RAFAEL CITY COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT Department: Pi Prepared by: City Manager Approval: File No.: 18.10.12 SUBJECT: A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN RAFAEL AWARDING A CONTRACT FOR SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL MISSION AVENUE SIDEWALK IMPROVEMENTS, PROJECT NO. 11093, TO GHILOTTI BROS., INC., IN THE AMOUNT OF $123,589.00. RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the City Council adopt the resolution awarding the contract to Ghilotti Bros., Inc., in the amount of $123,589.00. • o] S44M6109"11 On June 21, 2006 staff secured a federally funded Safe Routes to School grant to provide continuous walkways on Mission Avenue in the vicinity of San Rafael High School between Union Street and Belle Avenue. The project consists of the construction of sidewalks, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) pedestrian curb ramps, and the installation of traffic calming devices such as speed feedback signs. We applied for $177,000 and were awarded $159,300. A $17,700 City match is required. Staff successfully transferred this federal Safe Routes to School grant to a State funded Safe Routes to School program in August 2006, with the same funding conditions. To comply with ADA requirements, a small portion of the improvements will focus on the San Rafael High School driveway near Alice Street. We contacted School District Construction staff for permission to enter and construct on the school's property and for purposes of schedule coordination. The project was designed in-house. It was advertised in accordance with San Rafael's Municipal code and policies on May 9, 2008. Bids were opened on June 3, 2008. The low bid of $123,589 was $55,011 below the engineer's estimate of $178,600, which allows for additional improvements such as extending the sidewalk east of Belle Ave. FOR CITY CLERK ONLY File No.: L4-1-601 -F R'9—yv Council Meeting: G1 tb( og Disposition: RCG0t l--( log) * /S/% SAN RAFAEL CITY COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT / Page: 2 Please refer to the attached bid schedule for itemized breakdown of items.
