HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution No. 5823 (1505 Fifth Ave Historical Landmark)RESOLUTION NO 5823 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL DESIGNATING 1505 FIFTH AVENUE AS AN HISTORICAL LANDMARK WHEREAS, the Cultural Affairs Commission and the City Council have found, after conducting public hearings, that the 1505 Fifth Avenue site has significant value as part of the cultural characteristics of the City, exemplifies the cultural, social, and historic heritage of the community, portrays the environment in the era of history characterized by a distinctive architectural style, and embodies those distinguishing characteristics of an architectural type; and WHEREAS, a description of the characteristics of the 1505 Fifth Avenue site which justifies this designation and a description of those particular features that should be preserved are attached hereto as Exhibit A and are incorporated herein by reference; and WHEREAS, the location and boundaries of the 1505 Fifth Avenue site are those contained in Exhibit B attached hereto and incorporated herein by reference; and WHEREAS, a primary reason for designation is its visual significance to the neighborhood that the structure and landscaping be maintained in a manner appropriate to the style of the house; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of San Rafael, California, that the 1505 Fifth Avenue site hereinabove mentioned and described be and the same hereby is designated as an historical landmark, and shall be preserved and maintained pursuant to the provisions of Chapter 2.18 of the San Rafael Municipal Code; BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Clerk of the City of San Rafael is hereby directed to cause a copy of this Resolution, or notice thereof, to be recorded in the Office of the County Recorder. [ , J'k'' and Mayor Mulryan JEA . LEONCINI, City Clerk 1r EXHIBIT A Architectural Report Residence 1505 Fifth Avenue HISTORY: 1505 Fifth Avenue was built between 1887 and 1889. The original owner was Christopher Chisholm, a contractor, house and sign painter. The building was recently remodeled and is currently used as a professional office. ARCHITECTURE: " Building Type : 2 story wood shingled wood residence. Style: Stick Eastlake Siqnificant Architectural/Environmental Features: Steep pitched cross gabled roof. Triple window composition in gable. Bay window. Stained glass transom over entrance. Decorative frieze at eave with bracketed cornice. Evaluation: Architectural significance: Excellent Environmental: Major Desecration of Original Design: Little Historical/Cultural significance: Major Landscaping and Grounds: Recent landscaping and irrigation system installed, stone wall intact. Physical Condition Building and grounds excellent (11/1/79) " COMMENT: The building has been recently remodeled for office use. Cedar shingles replaced stuccoed wall portions and the composition roof. A new 6 -foot x 7 -foot porch was designed to compliment the structure and landscaping and an irrigation system were installed. The building is an excellent example of the Stick -Eastlake style residence of the period when it was built. Except for the recent porch addition, it looks as it did originally. Because of its location on Fifth Avenue and its imposing size, this building is a feature of downtown San Rafael. FXHIBIT B 1505 Fifth Avenue or 1023 "E" Street; Legal Description - AP 11-202-06 Commencing at a point of intersection of the southerly line of Fifth Avenue (formerly Fifth Street) with the westerly line of E Street, as said streets are laid down and delineated on the map entitled, "Plat of the Townsite of the Town of San Rafael" made by H. Austin, C.E., and of record in the Recorder's office of Marin County, California; running thence southerly and along the westerly line of said "E" Street, 65 feet, thence at right angles westerly parallel with the southerly line of Fifth Avenue, 130 feet to the easterly line of the lot of land conveyed by said Henry Scholsar and Charles M. Cole to Patrick Troy, by deed dated May 15, 1889 and recorded in liber 9 of deeds at page 576, thence at right angles northerly and along said Troy's easterly line 65 feet to the southerly line of Fifth Avenue; and thence easterly along said southerly line 130 feet to the point of commencement. Being a portion of Lot Number 1, in Block Number 6, as laid down and delineated on the map aforesaid.
