DAVIDSON MIDDLE SCHOOL IN SAN RAFAEL RECOMMENDATION: Approve Resolution BACKGROUND: The Boys & Girls Club of Marin and Southern Sonoma Counties entered into an agreement with the San Rafael City Schools District in August of 2008 to provide after school activities at James B. Davidson Middle School starting in January 2009. The District will provide the facilities located in the Middle School Annex and the Club will provide programming for up to 100 61h, 7th and 81h grade students in the areas of homework assistance, art, science and recreation. The Club is seeking support and endorsements from the community to promote their services and attract funding for operational costs. ANALYSIS: The City, through the Community Services, Library, Police and Fire Departments offer enrichment, educational, mentoring, recreation, literacy, technology, athletic, life skill and care for San Rafael youth, along with many other agencies and community sponsored organizations. Need exceeds services and therefore providers are cautious to avoid duplicity. The Boys & Girls Club will provide valuable services that extend those on campus to an additional 100 students. The description of the Club program activities is contained in Attachment A. FISCAL IMPACT: There are no fiscal impacts to the City by endorsing the Club. The cost per student to participate is nominal. Club operations costs will be born by community, philanthropic donations and support from the national Boys & Girls Clubs organization. OPTIONS: 1. File No.: Council Meeting: Disposition: FOR CITY CLERK ONLY RESOLUTION A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN RAFAEL IN SUPPORT OF THE BOYS & GIRLS CLUB OF MARIN AND SOUTHERN SONOMA COUNTIES IN THE ESTABLISHMENT OF AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMING AT JAMES B. DAVIDSON MIDDLE SCHOOL IN SAN RAFAEL WHEREAS, the City of San Rafael recognizes the need for afterschool activities for youth as noted in the General Plan 2020 and the FY 2007-2009 Budget Goals and Objectives; and WHEREAS the City provides Pre School, Afterschool Child Care, afterschool enrichment academic and mentoring programs, theater, sports, arts activities and seasonal events and camp programs for ages 3-14 years and; WHEREAS, the City welcomes community partners in serving youth and their families with quality enrichment, recreational and educational activity choices; and WHEREAS, the Boys and Girls Club of Marin and Southern Sonoma Counties propose to establish an after school program at James B. Davidson Middle School; and WHEREAS, the proposed program will increase the opportunities and choices for families seeking afterschool activities in San Rafael for their children, NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN RAFAEL DOES RESOLVE, TO SUPPORT THE BOYS & GIRLS CLUB OF MARIN AND SOUTHERN SONOMA COUNTIES IN THE ESTABLISHMENT OF AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMING AT JAMES B. DAVIDSON MIDDLE SCHOOL IN SAN RAFAEL I, Esther C.
