RECOMMENDATION: Approve Resolution authorizing temporary closure of Pt. San Pedro Road

BACKGROUND: The annual Marin County Marathon will be held Saturday morning, April 23, 2011
beginning at 7:00 am, at McNear's Beach County Park in San Rafael. - This is a not for profit event.
All proceeds are donated to charity, which this year include the Jeannette Prandi Children's Center,
Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Fit For Equality and the Center for Domestic Peace.
The event producer, local business man, Mark Liebert has already begun the process of notifying local
residents in the Peacock Gap area of this year's event details and has received nearly all positive
responses from the residents. Up to a thousand local and national athletes will participate in the event,
providing much needed funds to the charities mentioned above. This year the marathon will have its
pre -event gathering on April 22nd at San Rafael Joe's bringing several hundred athletes and families
into the area for an evening of entertainment.
The event will feature Bay Area personalities including the Morning Show of KFOG Radio DJ, Renee
Richardson, who will be the guest emcee while running and joining KTVU Channel 2's News Team
which includes Anchor Ken Wayne and Meteorologist Mark Tamayo, amongst others.
Event hours are 7:00am — 1:00pm; Streets to be closed from 7:00am to 12:00pm: including Eastbound
San Pedro Road from Riviera Drive to Biscayne Drive (one lane will be closed from Main Drive to
Riviera). The proposal will be coordinated with the Police, Fire, and Public Works.
FISCAL IMPACT: Staff and the Police Department are coordinating any City involvement with the
event producer, the County and the Highway Patrol. Since it is a very small part of the event course a
minimum number of Police officers will be required. The producer will pay for all related Police
services. Cleanup is being handled by the event producers.
ACTION REQUIRED: Approve Resolution authorizing temporary closure of eastbound Point San
Pedro Road at Riviera Drive to Biscayne Drive from 7am to 12pm, April 23rd, 2011 to allow for safe
