HomeMy WebLinkAboutFire Commission 2018-12-12 MinutesCITY OF SAN RAFAEL FIRE DEPARTMENT FIRE COMMISSION MEETING Minutes of the Regular Meeting December 12, 2018 1600 Los Gamos Drive, Suite 345, San Rafael, CA The meeting was called to order at 4pm by Chair Mizroch Present: Chief Gray, BC Rowan, Chair Mizroch, Vice-Chair Luckham, Commissioners Weathers, Fonkalsrud, & Hade Members of the public: Linda Barnello & Victoria Dewitt Prior minutes were approved with one correction. Open Time for Public: San Rafael citizen, Victoria Dewitt raised her concerns about a proposed new home in her neighborhood which she feels poses a fire risk. She believes the proposed home location will prove difficult for a fire engine to reach in case of fire. Although building permits in San Rafael are the jurisdiction of the Planning Commission, the Fire Commission is interested in the issue of access risk as relates to public safety vehicles. Chief Gray referenced “parking/fire safety rules” that are being considered by the San Rafael City Council. They are not yet approved. Linda Barnello voiced appreciation for the use of a San Rafael utility vehicle for a Marinwood Holiday project. CITY OF SAN RAFAEL FIRE DEPARTMENT FIRE COMMISSION MEETING Minutes of the Regular Meeting December 12, 2018 1600 Los Gamos Drive, Suite 345, San Rafael, CA Special Presentation to the Fire Commission: A group of seven students from Terra Linda High School gave a compelling presentation on the importance of clean air for the health of the community. The student group is from the Marin School of Environmental Leadership Air Pollution Team. They presented a clear and cogent case for ensuring clean air. The presentation described steps which can be taken to address air quality concerns. A comprehensive summary with detailed slides will be available on the website “MARINSELAIR”. The Fire Chief highlighted related health issues as a result of the recent Camp Fire. This Butte County conflagration adversely impacted Bay Area air quality for weeks. Fire Foundation Update: The December 8th Crab Feed was a big success. It was well attended and thoroughly enjoyed. The exact tally of funds raised will be computed soon. Fire Commission Reports: Vice Chair Luckham announced that the Measure E Citizen Oversight Committee (which he chairs) has reviewed the income and expenditures resulting from the Measure E 0.75% transaction and use tax. They determined that the resources have been properly allocated according to the Measure E guidelines. Chief Gray discussed a recent construction accident on East Marin Island (Fish and Wildlife land) that caused the death of a worker. The Fire Department and fire boat along with other agencies responded to the incident. 2. A status report was given on new station construction. Station 52 is expected to be substantially complete in January 2019 and hopefully occupied by March 2019. Station 57 should follow some months later. Public Safety building 1 is slated for completion in 2020. 3. Reports on “Get Ready” and the certificates of “Fire Wise Neighborhoods” was discussed. The meeting was adjourned at 4:50pm.
