1. RESOLUTION IN MEMORY OF LAUREN CATUZZI GRANDCOLAS WHO PERISHED ON UNITED
AIRLINES FLIGHT 93 ON SEPTEMBER 11, 2001 (CM) – FILE 109 x 102
Mayor Boro stated that Lauren Catuzzi Grandcolas of San Rafael, the victim of a terrorist attack on United
Flight 93 on September 11, 2001, was born in Bloomington, Indiana, and was a graduate of Stafford High
School in Houston, Texas and the University of Texas in Austin.
He indicated that she and her husband Jack were married on June 15, 1991. Lauren worked as a
Marketing Director for the Law Firm of Thelin, Marin, Johnson and Bridges and in a similar capacity for the
Accounting Firm Price Waterhouse. He explained that most recently, Lauren had been working for Good
Housekeeping Magazine and was collaborating with a publisher on a book idea related to women’s lifestyle
achievements, aimed at boosting the self-esteem and self-confidence of women specifically, and adult
behavior in general. Mayor Boro stated this non-fiction work was a long-term goal and a source of great
pride for her, reporting that Lauren’s book would be completed by her family, with all proceeds going to the
Lauren Grandcolas Foundation, established in her memory. He stated that the Foundation would distribute
100% of the proceeds to support charitable causes.
Mayor Boro stated that just some weeks ago, a donation of $50,000 was made to Marin General Hospital to
sponsor a “Birthing Room” in the Obstetric Care Ward, in Lauren’s honor and memory. He indicated this
was especially fitting since Lauren was two months pregnant at the time of her death.
Mayor Boro stated that Lauren loved life and lived it to the fullest. She was strong in her beliefs and
courageous to the end. He indicated her message from Flight 93 to her husband and family was strong,
calm, loving and unafraid and she showed incredible strength, commitment, conviction and control. Her
selflessness and caring nature towards other people knew no bounds and was demonstrated during the
final moments of eminent peril.
Mayor Boro stated that the place to be dedicated this evening was one she frequently visited and with the
dedication, her brave deeds, courageous death and love of life would always be present.
Councilmember Cohen moved and Councilmember Phillips seconded, to adopt the resolution.
