HomeMy WebLinkAboutHR Proclamation Supporting Black History MonthPROCLAMATION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN RAFAEL PROCLAIMING THE MONTH-LONG CELEBRATION OF BLACK HISTORY MONTH IN FEBRUARY WHEREAS, In 1976, as part of the nation’s bicentennial, Black History Week was expanded and became established as Black History Month, and Americans of all walks of life have come together since then during the month of February to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history; and WHEREAS, Black culture is American culture, and Black stories are essential to the ongoing story of America and it is essential that we take time to celebrate the immeasurable contributions of Black Americans and honor the legacies and achievements of generations past and continue to address and work towards reversing injustices of the past; and WHEREAS, The Black History Month theme for 2022 focuses on the importance of Black Health and Wellness. This theme acknowledges the legacy of not only Black scholars and medical practitioners in Western medicine, but also other ways of knowing (e.g., birthworkers, doulas, midwives, naturopaths, herbalists, etc.) throughout the African Diaspora; and WHEREAS, The 2022 theme considers activities, rituals and initiatives that Black communities have done to be well. Black Health and Wellness not only includes one’s physical body, but also emotional and mental health; and WHEREAS, The City of San Rafael Library & Recreation Department provides resources and programming specifically to educate the community on important topics such as anti-racism and equity, such as: https://srpubliclibrary.org/research/resources-on-anti-racism-and-equity/; and WHEREAS, The City Council of the City of San Rafael, takes great pleasure in recognizing Black History Month, and urges all residents of San Rafael to join in celebrating the accomplishments of African Americans in the medical field and beyond, and encourages the people of San Rafael to support and advocate for the health and wellness of our African American community. NOW, THEREFORE, The City Council of the City of San Rafael Hereby Proclaims the month of February 2022 as Black History Month and recognizes the many accomplishments African Americans have historically achieved and the many ongoing contributions they make to our society and our local community across Marin County and San Rafael.
