RE: Mark Day School Proposed Construction, 39 Trellis Drive, San Rafael
Delivery of Petition "Keep our Neighborhood Residential"
Attached here please find a copy of the petition stating our opposition to the
proposed construction at Mark Day School, 39 Trellis Drive, of a multi-story 11,270
square foot building in our residential neighborhood.
You will find a total of 223 signatures -178 electronic signatures and 4S hard copy
Signatures.
The petition was created by a group of concerned neighbors with the goal of
working with Mark Day School to meet their business needs in a way that works
with the community they are a part of. The reference to the Master Plan comes
from one of our members who is an original Trellis Drive homeowner. The family
bought the house because of the original Terra Linda plan of creating neighborhood '
schools that integrate with the surrounding community.

This is EXACTLY what our neighborhood DOES NOT need. This will bring privacy issues, safely issues for
our school age children and entirely too much traffic. We are supposed to be protected from new construction.

The traffic to and from this school from out of the area families, already makes crossing the street on Las
Pavadas and other nejghboring streets very challenge for local children trying to walk to our local public
school. The increased building size would undoubtedly inc.rease the traffic and the hazard to these children
and elderly pedestrian neighbors. .

Letter Supporting Mark Day Scho ol Project
I am writing to expr es s my support for the proposed Learning Commons and Creativity Lab at Mark Day
School. I have been employed at Mark Day School (formerly Saint Mark's) for twenty-two years and believe
this project will significantly improve the educational experience of the students. As a San Rafael (Ter ra Linda)
resident, I also believe that this campus enhancement w ill be a tremendou s asset to the community.
The Learning Comm o ns and Creativity Lab will open new doors for students and faculty, allowing them to
utilize more modern and flexible spaces and tools. Right now, Mark Day School is somewhat constrained by
the structures on its 50 year old campus. This project will help creat e a 21 st century learning experience for all
students -from Kindergarten through 8th Grad~.
Mark Day Schoo! prides itself on havi ng a relationship with its neighbors that is based on resp .ect for one
another. I have witnessed this firsthand, being an employee of the school. We are constantly reminded to be
concerned about the welfare of our neighbors in terms of not parking on the street in front of their houses,
slowing down when driving on the neighborhood streets and keeping the flow of cars moving during drop-off
and pick-up times so as not to block traffic, just to name a few. I believe that the design and purpose ofthe
Learning Commons and Creativity Lab is in keeping with this relationship. I urge you to support the project.
Sincerely,
Sandra Bohm

In Support of Mark Day School Enhancement Project!
I'am writing to express my heart felt support for the proposed Learning Commons and Creativity Lab at Mark Day
School. My children Peter and Antonia are students at the school and this project will significantly improve their overall
educational experience. As a San Rafael resident, I also believe that this campus enhancement will be a tremendous
asset to the community.
The Learning Commons and Creativity Lab will open new doors for students and faculty, allowing them to utilize more
modern and flexible spaces and tools. Right now, Mark Day School is somewhat constrained by the structures on its 50
year old campus. This project will help create a 21st century learning experience for all students -from Kindergarten
through 8th Grade.
Mark Day School prides itself on having a relationship with its neighbors that is based on respect for one another. I
believe that the design and purpose 6fthe Learning Commons and Creativity Lab is in keeping with this relationship. I
urge you to support the project.

Oear Mr, Stafford:
I want to express our support for the proposed Learning Commons and Creativity Lab at Mark Day
School. My wife and I have two children at the school, ages 8 and 9. These new improvements will
directly improve their education and ready them to compete in the technology related marketplace as
they move towards adulthood.
Mark Day School is a fabulous community of students, faculty and teachers .... we could not be happier
with our choice to send our kids to this wonderful environment. Having said this, the buildings and
campus are approximately 50 year's old, and need to be updated and augmented to provide a 21st
century learning experience for all students -from Kindergarten through 8th Grade . To me, this is a
primary responsibility of today's schools and Is, In fact, one of the foremost reasons we have chosen to
enroll our kids at Mark Day School.

Mark Day School
We are writing to express our support for the proposed Learning Commons and Creativity Lab at Mark Day
School. Our son is fortunate to be a second grader at the schoo l and we are confident this project will significantly
improve his overall educational experience. As San Rafael residents, we also believe that this campus
enhancement will be a tremendous asset to the community, even as we believe the education our son is receiving
at Mark Day will assist him in being an asset to his generation .
What we, as parents, have learned in our few years at this school is that no decisions are made without
significant consideration and thoughtfulness. A change such as th is one, in both the physical structure ofthe
school and the ability to fully embrace a 21st century curriculum as the need unfolds, has been made after
thorough research and planning. T.he Learning Commons and Creativity Lab will open new doors for students and
faculty, allowing them to utilize more modern and flexible spaces and tools. Mark Day School makes incredibly
efficient use of its space, but is obviously constrained by the structures on its 50 year old campus. All students, K-
8th , as well as faculty and staff will benefit from the proposed changes.
We know that Mark Day School prides itself on having a relationsh i p with its neighbors that is based on
respect for one another; this is made cl ear th rough the comm unications with fami lies regarding parking) traffic
and an overall consideration for the surrounding neighborhood. We believe that the design and purpose of the
Learning Commons and Creativity Lab is in keeping with this relationship. We urge you to give your full support to
this project.

Both of us have been involved in the San Rafael/Terra Linda Community. Monica has served on board of the Mont
Marin/San Rafael Park Neighborhood Association, and works with our underserved communities in the Canal District in
her position as a nurse at the Marin Community Clinics. Mike practices at his Greenbrae office and is involved in the
Dixie/Terra Linda Little League.
This has allowed us to interact with many parts of our community. We have heard and discussed some of the concerns
that have voiced about the project. We have also seen first hand the benefit of Mark Day School's partnership
with the children from the district. They have access Mark Day School infrastructure and resources and gain
exposure to 21st century educational methodologies and materials that help to reduce socio-economic discrepancies as
well as r and enhance the diversity our community.
It is our opinion that the majority the homeowners in this area, including Terra are proud of
level of our public and private institutions.
It is in the community's best interest that we perpetuate support for high quality education in our community. This
should be one of the highest priorities in any well-developed society.
We also believe that in order to keep up with current trends in education and maximize student potential, each school
should have the ability to grow and expand within reasonable limits.
It is our understanding that Mark Day's project would not significantly alter the skyline and character this part of
great Terra Linda neighborhood and additionally will not result in an increase in student volume, vehicle traffic, noise
or evening activity.
In summary, we project will benefit not only Mark Day School and its current and future students, but will
benefit the commu at large as well.
We hope you agree to approve this
Thank you

Mark Day Proposed Project-opposition
I have lived at 950 Las Pavadas in Terra Linda for 22 years.
1 recently heard about a proposed multi-story, over 11,000 square foot, business building to go in to replace a
single story school building.
I walked by to see the story poles and was honified at the size.
It simply has no place in a residential neighborhood!
Beyond the fact that it will negatively affect my propeliy values, conflict with existing design plans in the area
and block views, it will create an indusb:ial feel in a neighborhood that is mostly small single family homes.
Yes, Kaiser is there-but it is further up the hiil and they are a necessary addition to the neighborhood .
Yes, St. Isabella's is there-but it is not a massive building densely clustered with others
Yes, Vallecito's is there-but it is apublic school and again , not a 30 foot tall building of over 11,000 sq ft.
I strongly oppose the proposed building at Mark Day School as it has been depicted by visuals.
P lease share my conunents with the Design Review Board and the Planning Commission.
I will have more comments to make at the November 4th meeting.
Thank you for your time

Dear Steve,
Thank you for your time and on Tuesday, 3D, regarding the matter of the
construction from a 3,935 square foot building to a new 11/270 foot, multi-
story administration/library buildIng at 39 Trellis Drive (Mark Day School).
, We continue to oppose this proposed building as height will be an obstruction to the
neighborhood views of the nearby hills as well as an aesthetic abomination in the m idd.le of a
predominately single-story residential neighborhood. The additional factor of its Invasion of
privacy to homes adjacent to the building Is totally unacceptable. Indeed, not only will the
backyard of our home completely open to view from their second story, but due to the
configuration of our home, will be dear views into both our living and dIning rooms
through our home's two, picture windows. This exists for other neighbors' homes.
We want to reiterate our and our neighbors' distaln at the construction of a multi-story office
building in the proxImity of our Terra linda neighborhood, two-story design In a primarily
residential home division Is totally Inappropriate,
As'homeowners, we implore the City of San Rafael NOTto approve
into our neighborhood.

Support for Learning Commons and Creativity Lab at Mark Day School
I am writing to express my support and to encourage you to lend your support for the proposed Learning Commons and
Creativity Lab at Mark Day School. I am a proponent of this new plan as it will greatly enhance the overall educational
experience for my children who are Mark Day students and for generations of San Rafael residents to come.
The Learning Commons and Creativity Lab will create new spaces where both students and faculty can utilize more
modern and flexible spaces and tools. Right now, Mark Day School is somewhat constrained by the structures on its SO
year old campus. This project will create learning spaces for collaborative work for all students -from Kindergarten
through 8th Grade. Isn't this what all parents want for their children-enhancements to their schools at no additional
cost to the community as a whole? I certainly do.
As a San Rafael reSident, I also believe that this campus enhancement will be a tremendous asset to the community as a
whole while keeping in line with the master plan of the Terra Linda community. The new plans will in no way add to
congestion of the surrounding neighborhood, will not decrease home values but are being designed and created with
our community values in mind. Mark Day School prides itself on having a relationship with its neighbors that is based on
respect for one another.
I urge you to support the project.

Mark Day School
I am writing to express my enthusiasm and support for the proposed Learning Commons and
Creativity Lab at Mark Day School. Our family has been part of the Ma rk Day School community for
eigh tee n years. My husband Patrick and I have two alumni children who first enrolled in
kindergarten; one is now a freshman in college and one is a recent college gra du ate . I am a past
trustee of Mark Day School and am c urrent ly employed there as the Director of Admissions.
We have been San Rafael residents for over twenty years, first in th e Dominican nei ghborh ood, and
for the last twelve years in Lucas Valley. Patrick and I have voted for every schoo l bond measure in
Marin, even though our children never attended public schools. We believe it is ou r responsibility to
suppo rt education for future ge nerations. We will vote for Measure C on November 4. We supported
the Dominican building project in the late '90s when we were neighbors on Grand Avenue because
we fervently believed then and believe now that education is the single most important element in
developing good citizens in a strong society . We feel we are obligated to do whatever we can to
provide grea t learning environments for the children and young adults in our community.
We believe that the proposed Learning Commons and Creativity Lab at Mark Day School will allow
current and future Mark Day School students to become better collaborators and better systems
thinkers; it will allow creativity and problem-solving to go hand in hand as students imagine ways in
which they can have a be ne ficial impact on their future world. It will a llow them to hone their
communication skills, tho ug h tradi ti onalliteracies like reading and w ritin g, and also through media
literacy, which increasingly affects t he way we all see, interpret and influence the world.
Joe Harvey talks about the impact of brain research on teaching and learning. Brain research has
transformed the ways in which educators think about pedagogy and best practices to deliver their
program. Our 50-year old campus is in dire need of updating to provide modern and flexible spaces
and tools to allow us to employ that pedagogy and do our best work for the benefit of the kids.
As always, our community strives to be good neighbors. Our relationship is based on trust, respect
and communication. The design plans for the Lea rn ing Commons and Creativity Lab are in keeping
with the feel of the neighborhood; no variance is prop osed for height or encroach ment. The
architects had in mind the mission and values of the school in designing a sus tai nable, flexible,
durable learning environment. I urge you to approve the plans .
Sincerely,
Wendy Broderick
