Chair Lentini shared that the San Rafael Public Library Foundation funded an effort to produce a promotional/informational film for community awareness as to why San Rafael needs a new library facility. LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES AGENDA REPORT June 13, 2023 Item #5 TITLE: SUMMER READING PLANNING 2023 RECOMMENDATION: That the Board of Trustees review the report and provide comment. BACKGROUND: The San Rafael Public Library has historically provided children with a Summer Reading Challenge in which children track their reading and earn prizes, coupled with summer enrichment programming at the library during the months of June-August. The Summer Reading Challenge has taken on various iterations, including a paper only program in which children tracked their days, time or pages read, and a hybrid virtual and paper program in which children earned points for completing activities. Since Summer 2019, the San Rafael Public Library has offered an evergreen paper log shared by the Marin County Free Library system (MCFL). For the past two summers, library staff visited Marin YMCA and Bay Area Community Resource (BACR) summer enrichment sites to hand out logs and free books to participating students. DISCUSSION: For Summer 2023, San Rafael Public Library staff designed a new bilingual (English and Spanish) paper log which is distinct from the log that will be used by MCFL. This year we are collaborating with our colleagues in the Recreation division of our department as well as our community partners to expand our reach into the community. The Summer Reading Challenge will challenge students in grades K-6 to pick up a book (or audiobook) and read at least 20 days this summer. It doesn’t matter if they read for a few minutes or a few hours; we recognize that all children have different circumstances and capacities. Students track their reading on their paper log (Attachment 1) and return their completed paper log to any of our 3 branches to earn a new book to keep. We have historically purchased giveaway books from Scholastic, but this year we ar e partnering with Copperfield’s Books, a local bookstore, to purchase a selection of popular and high-quality books at a discount for students to choose from. This Spring we partnered with the Librarian at the San Rafael City Schools (SRCS) to send each student rising into grades K-6 home with a log and a schedule of our summer enrichment activities. Through this effort we reached 3500 students. San Rafael Page 2 of 2 students in grades K-6 who do not attend SRCS schools can visit any of our libraries to pick-up a log, participate in the challenge, and attend our fun programs. We are also partnering with SRCS, YMCA and BACR to schedule outreach visits to their summer enrichment sites. SRCS works with these two organizations to offer a free summer day camp experience to students who are identified by their schools as the most in-need of summer support. Library staff will be visiting 6 sites and handing out giveaway books from Copperfield’s to 1190 students and promoting library programs and services. These giveaway books are in addition to the books that the students will receive when they complete the Summer Reading Challenge. In addition to the Summer Reading Challenge, library staff have planned a diverse a rray of free literacy, art, recreational and cultural programs for patrons of all ages. These programs include author talks, puppet and magic shows, bicycling and park trips, drawing classes and special storytimes. Staff created a promotional tri-fold brochure (Attachment 2) which we are distributing at our libraries and at the San Rafael community centers and pools. We also sent an email to all San Rafael residents with library cards promoting our summer offerings (Attachment 3). All promotional materials are bilingual in English and Spanish. Staff will measure the impact of our efforts through metrics such as the number of reading logs distributed, the number of participants who attend our summer enrichment programs, the number of books distributed at the summer sites and in our libraries, and through feedback from our patrons. FISCAL IMPACT: There is no financial impact associated with the review of this item. However, the total cost of our summer enrichment programs, printed reading logs, and giveaway books is just under $19,000.
