MINUTES 1. Approve regular meeting minutes of April 5, 2023 Member Sprague moved and Member Tanchez seconded, to approve the meetings minutes of April 5, 2023. School-Year Co-Sponsorship Application Committee Recommendations A. DrawBridge Weekly Expressive Art Groups Chair Mason shared a brief overview of the School Year Co-Sponsorship application for the DrawBridge Weekly Expressive Art Groups. Member Yost moved and Member Palacios seconded, to approve full co- sponsorship of the DrawBridge Weekly Expressive Art Groups Co-Sponsorship Application. Tamalpais Adult School – English As A Second Language Classes Chair Mason shared a brief overview of the School Year Co-Sponsorship application for Tamalpais Adult School. Member Tanchez moved and Member Sprague seconded, to approve full co- sponsorship of the Tamalpais Adult School English as a second language Co- Sponsorship Application. Canal Alliance/Marin Football Club: Canal FC at Marin FC Chair Mason shared a brief overview of the School Year Co-Sponsorship for the Canal Alliance/Marin Football Club: Canal FC at Marin FC application. Members discussed granting a partial sponsorship of 75%. Would like next time to see a comparison between first and second year budgets. Concerns of only advancing four out of 78 participants and no girls. Member Tanchez moved and Member Vasquez seconded, to approve the Canal FC at Marin FC Co-Sponsorship Application for the full requested amount. Marin YMCA: YMCA 2023-2024 Afterschool Program Chair Mason shared a brief overview of the School Year Co-Sponsorship application for the Marin YMCA 2023-2024 After School Program. Member Palacios moved and Member Tanchez seconded, to full co-sponsorship of approve the Marin YMCA 2023-2024 Afterschool Program Co-Sponsorship Application. Vivalon: Zumba by Vivalon Chair Mason shared a brief overview of the School Year Co-Sponsorship application for Zumba by Vivalon. Member Sprague moved and Member Vasquez seconded, to approve full co- sponsorship of the Zumba by Vivalon Co-Sponsorship Application. AYES: Members: Palacios, Sprague, Tanchez, Vasquez, Yost NOES: Members: None ABSENT: Members: Ceballos, Hau-Guiterrez ABSTAINED: Members: None Motion Approved COMMITTEE REPORTS AND COMMENTS 3. Other brief reports on any meetings, conferences, and/or seminars attended by the Commission members. Nancy Palacios announced that the Farmer’s Market was starting up again. There is food, music and fun. Rosa Vasquez shared that Dining under the lights happening as well. Kate Sprague was glad to see the parking was opening up, and also, they reserved a couple of new street parking spots for public shore parking. She was curious to see how they are going to preserve the spots. 5 Louise Yost let the members know that the Canal Community Garden had a cherry picking event and potluck for the kids. Ms. Palacios also shared that the Sun Valley Park is now open. The dedication is Wednesday, July 12th. STAFF COMMENTS 4. Updates and Events of Interest Chair Mason provided the following updates: Canal Art Mural Proposal. Public Art Review Board also provide conditional approval of the project. Wall damage from window leaks may lead to a delay in the mural installation, still waiting for some design alterations and approvals before eventually going to the City Council for final project approval. Four of our Canal Karate participants won first, second or third place awards at the Ozawa Cup International Karate Tournament in Las Vegas April 6-8. Additionally, 30 students advanced belt levels at the Canal Karate Belt Ceremony 5/31. Vice Mayor Llorens Gulati assisted with the presentation. Community Center staff have partnered with Vivalon in offering a new program for older adults in the Canal community. “Bingocize” is a fall prevention course in a game-style format, combining Bingo with exercise for one’s body, mind and spirit. The free class is offered in both Spanish and Vietnamese on Tuesdays on its own and on Wednesdays in partnership with our Multicultural Older Adult Program. Program Coordinator Cristina Farhang was the special guest on Cuerpo Corazón Comunidad, a Spanish-language interview program broadcast on the radio and streamed on YouTube and Facebook Live. Cristina informed listeners of all the recreational opportunities, from preschool to adults, that are available this summer though the Recreation Division. The community was treated to a free Marin Theatre Company performance of “WHERE DID WE SIT ON THE BUS?” on Friday, May 19th. The energetic, musical, theatrical experience examined what it means to be Latiné in America and was attended by youth and adults. Summer Programs o Canal Mini Soccer League- $15 each thanks to a grant from the County o Dance, Music, Theater Arts & Fitness Summer Camp (2 sessions) o Junior Giants 121 currently enrolled and growing. 10 volunteer coaches o Multicultural Older Adult Program 6 o National Academy of Sports Camps (All Sports and Basketball) o Salsa, Merengue & Bachata Level 1 for adults is full o San Rafael Basketball Academy two session full with 40 participants each o Online Voice Over Class o Open Gym Sports In addition to the new parking spaces on Canal/Spinnaker Point Drive, the City is trying a pilot program of providing Overnight Parking at Bahia Vista School June 15 – August 15, 5 pm to 6 am. June 15-30 $20, July 1-31 $40, and August 1-15 $20. Additionally, parking time limits in the commercial section of the Canal have been expanded during the weekends.
