Open Time for Public Expression The public is welcome to address the Fire Commission at this time on matters not on the agenda that are within its jurisdiction. Please be advised that pursuant to Government Code Section 54954.2, the Fire Commission is not permitted to discuss or take action on any matter not on the agenda unless it determines that an emergency exists, or that there is a need to take immediate action which arose following posting of the agenda. Comments may be no longer than two minutes and should be respectful to the community. 2. Approval of Minutes – October 9, 2024 Recommended Action: Amend and or approve as submitted. 3. Chair and Vice Chair – Appoint Chair and Vice Chair for 2025 Recommended Action: Approve new Chair and Vice Chair 4. Fire Foundation – Verbal Update from Commissioner Donna McCusker Recommended Action: Accept Verbal Report and take appropriate action. 5. 150th Anniversary Sub Committee – Verbal Update from Commissioner Chung Recommended Action: Accept Verbal Report and take appropriate action. 6. No action to be taken on these items. 7. Fire Chief Report Informational only. No action to be taken. Any records relating to an agenda item, received by a majority or more of the board or commission less than 72 hours before the meeting, shall be available for inspection at San Rafael Fire Department’s Administrative Office, 1375 Fifth Avenue, San Rafael, CA. CITY OF SAN RAFAEL FIRE COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING MINUTES Wednesday, October 09, 2024, at 4:00 p.m. In person meeting at 1375 Fifth Ave, San Rafael, CA 94901 The meeting was called to order at 4:00 PM by Chair Burford Present: Chair Stan Burford Commissioner David Fonkalsrud Commissioner John Chung Commissioner Brian Waterbury Commissioner Donna McCusker Commissioner Ken Johnson Chief Roman Chief Sinnott 1. Open Time for Public Expression No public Comment. 2. Approval of Minutes – September 11, 2024 Chair Burford asks if there are any corrections or objections, hearing none, the minutes are adopted unanimously. 3. Fire Foundation – Verbal Update from Commissioner Donna McCusker Commissioner McCusker provides an overview of the Fire Foundation. It was founded a decade ago by Leonard Thompson and current president. Everything the Foundation does and raises goes to the firefighters and department. The Foundation has purchased two previous boats and done the “boots for troops program”. The Foundation meets monthly virtually for an hour. The crab feed this year has been canceled and is in serious need of additional support. 4. 150th Anniversary Sub Committee – Verbal Update from Commissioner Chung Sunday, December 15 will be the Station 51 open house. The memorial plaque will be remounted in the PSC lobby. 5. Current Media Coverage Protecting Those Who Protect Us – Marin Magazine Commissioner McCusker says that IAFF says 75% of fallen fighters honored at the fallen firefighter memorial in September were due to occupational cancer. 6. Chair and Commission Member Reports Stan Burford– Chair: No report David Fonkalsrud- Vice Chair: No report Ken Johnson: FAIR Agent in Marin would like to come to the next Fire Commission to share what they are trying to do. Donna McCusker: No report John Chung: Asks about USAR and Chief indicated that we have a County USAR. Brian Waterbury: Worked with the Marin County Fire History Museum since last meeting. Recorded a video that will be shared later. 7. Fire Chief Report Chief Sinnott shared news and information regarding the department since the last meeting. A badge pinning ceremony was done and that will be held annually now. Two new ambulances have been purchased and added to the fleet. Meeting adjourned at 4:56 PM.
