RESOLUTION ENDORSING MARINE AFFAIRS CONFERENCE
RECOMMENDATIONS
WHEREAS, the phenomenal growth rate of Northern California in the post -
World War II era has continued for another year without lessening, and imposes
still greater responsibility on the region and its communities to assure economic
expansion sufficient to absorb this heavy increase of population and of the labor
force; and
WHEREAS, navigable waterways have provided the original impetus for much of
our growth by providing access to the hinterland and rich natural resources, and
for their efficient shipment, export and distribution; and
WHEREAS, the need to further study, improve andmaintain these arteries
and harbors - as has been the responsibility of the Federal, State and local
governments - increases with our demands on water-bovne commerce since retention
and expansion of our industries will to a large degree be dependent on the economical
transportationaafforded by modern -sized channels and ports; and
WHEREAS, the importance of this commerce is testified to by 1962 world
commerce of the region exceeding $1,300,000,000, plus the value of domestic
shipments, our important fishing industry, ancillary activities generated by this
huge volume of ships and cargoes, and burgeoning recreational use of the waterways;
and
WHEREAS, the region and its communities are represented by officially -
designated participation in the Northern California Marine Affairs Conference,
which annually gives careful study to navigational needs for orderly and efficient
maintenance, expansion and improvement of our waterways;
