BACKGROUND/ANALYSIS:
Election of the Vice Mayor for 2025
At the final City Council meeting of each year, the City Council elects one of its members to serve as Vice
Mayor for the upcoming calendar year. This process is a customary part of the Council’s annual
proceedings, ensuring continuity in leadership and providing support to the Mayor.
The role of the Vice Mayor is to act in the Mayor’s stead when the Mayor is unavailable, preside over
council meetings, and represent the City at various functions. Traditionally, the position rotates among
councilmembers based on tenure.
Appointment of San Rafael Councilmembers to Various Committees for 2025
Each year at the final City Council meeting, the San Rafael City Council appoints its members to serve
on various local and regional committees for the upcoming calendar year. These committee assignments
play a critical role in shaping policy, fostering collaboration with neighboring jurisdictions, and addressing
the diverse needs of the San Rafael community.
Councilmembers serve on committees that cover a wide range of topics, including transportation,
housing, economic development, environmental sustainability, and public safety. Some committees are
local to San Rafael, while others are regional, representing San Rafael’s interests in broader initiatives
and ensuring the City has a voice in decisions that impact the Bay Area and beyond.
Committee appointments are an opportunity to leverage the skills and interests of each councilmember,
while ensuring the City is well-represented across various boards and working groups. These

assignments also provide councilmembers with the ability to advocate for the City’s priorities and build
relationships that benefit San Rafael's residents and businesses.
The 2025 appointments continue the Council’s tradition of fostering strong leadership and effective
representation in these important roles.
