Brief
History….
•Early 1900s: The San Rafael
Improvement Club is in charge of
mosquito control
•1903-1905- Research on salt marsh
mosquitoes was conducted in Marin
County
•November 6, 1915: The first district in
California is formed: Mosquito
Abatement District No.1, also known
as the Marin Mosquito Abatement
District (MAD)
•1976 Annexed Central Sonoma and its
surrounding areas
•1995: MAD changes its name to
Marin/Sonoma Mosquito and Vector
Control District
•Now serve 763,000 residents in both
Marin and Sonoma County

What is Integrated
Vector Management
(IVM)?
An approach to controlling vector-borne diseases (WNV,
SLE, WEE, Dengue, Zika, Malaria, Dog Heartworm) by
implementing a combination of strategies that are
environmentally compatible, cost effective and sustainable.

as the Yellow Fever & Asian Tiger mosquitoes could bring
the threat of new diseases.

WNV Statewide: 124 cases, 12 fatalities, 2,006 positive mosquito samples
SLE Statewide: 0 human cases, 34 positive mosquito samples
Locally Acquired Dengue: 15 cases (all in Southern California)
