HomeMy WebLinkAboutCM Hispanic Heritage Month Proclamation City of San Rafael Proclamation in Recognition of HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH September 15 – October 15, 2025 WHEREAS, the City of San Rafael proudly celebrates the vibrant contributions, diverse cultures, and rich histories of Hispanic and Latino individuals, families, and communities across the United States—whose ancestral roots trace to Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Central America, South America, Spain, Africa, and the Caribbean ; and WHEREAS, National Hispanic Heritage Month, observed annually from September 15 to October 15, honors the independence anniversaries of several Latin American nations: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua on September 15, Mexico on September 16, and Chile on September 18, culminating in observances such as Día de la Raza on October 12, which recognizes the fusion of Indigenous, African, and European cultures in the Americas; and WHEREAS, in 2025, the national theme for Hispanic Heritage Month, "Todos Somos, Somos Uno: We Are All, We Are One," underscores the unity, shared identity, and collective strength of Hispanic and Latino communities, while recognizing their intersectional identities, histories, and aspirations; and WHEREAS, Hispanic and Latino Americans represent over 19% of the population —now exceeding 65 million people—and continue to shape the nation’s culture, economy, innovation, and public service; and WHEREAS, we recognize the invaluable contributions of Hispanic and Latino residents to the local, regional, and national economies—as workers, entrepreneurs, artists, scientists, educators, public servants, and community leaders who continue to enrich and strengthen our democratic society; and WHEREAS, the City of San Rafael was named after the Mission San Rafael Arcángel, which was the first organized settlement in both the location of San Rafael and the whole of Marin County; and WHEREAS, in San Rafael, over 30% of the City’s population identifies as Hispanic, Latino, and/or Indigenous, and the City honors the many cultural, economic, and civic contributions of this community and its leaders and the dedicated work of community partners including Canal Alliance, the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Marin, Latino Council, Voces del Canal, the Multicultural Center of Marin, and many individuals within our own City workforce, and all of the contributions from Hispanic and Latino residents, citizens, and communities to the economic, cultural, social, and historic fabric of our City; and WHEREAS, Hispanic Heritage Month is a meaningful opportunity to celebrate cultural pride, reflect on generations of perseverance and achievement, and commit to equity, inclusion, and the uplift of all voices in our shared community. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Mayor and City Council of the City of San Rafael, hereby proclaim September 15 through October 15, 2025, as Hispanic Heritage Month in the City of San Rafael and encourage all residents to deepen their cultural understanding, uplift the legacies and achievements of Hispanic and Latino communities, and join in celebration and solidarity to advance equity, representation, and unity for all.
