Proclamation in Recognition of
SUICIDE PREVENTION AWARENESS MONTH
September 1 – 30, 2025
WHEREAS, September is recognized nationally as Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, a
time when mental health professionals, prevention organizations, survivors,
allies, and communities unite to change the narrative about suicide in our
community by promoting hope, fostering open dialogue, destigmatizing
mental health issues, and celebrating the possibility of recovery; and
WHEREAS, suicide is a major public health concern that can affect anyone regardless of age,
race, gender, sexual orientation, economic status, or background. It has far-
reaching social, emotional, and economic impacts on individuals, families, and
communities; and
WHEREAS, in Marin County, 65 friends, neighbors, and family members died by suicide
between 2020 and 2025, with an additional 794 self-harm injuries requiring
visits to the Emergency Room during 2020 through 2023, underscoring the
ongoing need for local prevention and support efforts; and
WHEREAS, suicide remains the second leading cause of death among individuals aged 10
to 34 in the United States, and the 11th leading cause of death overall, with more
than 49,000 deaths by suicide reported nationally in 2023, the highest number
on record; and
WHEREAS, for every death by suicide, it is estimated that approximately 25 suicide
attempts occur, and many more individuals experience suicidal thoughts or
ideations. Early recognition of warning signs, reducing stigma, and offering
compassionate support can lead to effective interventions and save lives, and
allow for healing to begin; and
WHEREAS, Marin County’s September campaign, “Ask. Listen. Connect.” provides the
language and tools for everyone to take critical steps to save lives and build a
more understanding, connected, and safe community; and
WHEREAS, the City of San Rafael recognizes that suicide prevention requires collective
action—through education, early intervention, access to care, and building
supportive and connected communities; and reminds all residents and
community members that the National Alliance on Mental Illness and the 988
Suicide and Crisis Lifeline (dial 988) works to help individuals in crisis and
provide resources for loved ones who want to support individuals.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Mayor and City Council of the City of San Rafael hereby
proclaim the month of September 2025, as Suicide Prevention Awareness Month in the City of San
Rafael, and call upon the community to raise awareness about mental health, promote equity in access
to care, support individuals and families affected by suicide and suicidal ideation, and help create a
culture of openness, support, and healing throughout our community.
