Item #3a
TITLE: PROPOSAL TO INSTALL A MURAL IN THE PICKLEWEED LIBRARY’S
NEW CHILDREN’S ROOM AT 50 CANAL STREET
RECOMMENDATION
That the Public Art Review Board recommend approval of the Youth in Arts public art
proposal for the installation of a mural in the new Children’s Room at the Pickleweed
Library, located at 50 Canal Street.
BACKGROUND
The City of San Rafael welcomes proposals for the creation and display of public artworks
and exhibitions on property that is owned, occupied, or managed by the City. In 2022, the
San Rafael City Council approved the formation of the Public Art Review Board (Board).
The Board’s responsibilities include providing recommendations to the City Council
regarding long-term (greater than one year) public art installations and for approving
applications for temporary (one year or less) public art exhibitions.
The Public Art Review Board is responsible for reviewing proposals in alignment with the
City’s Public Art Review Guidelines, which were established as part of the Public Art
Review Process.
The Public Art Review Board guidelines include:
• Project Readiness
• Qualifications
• Funding
• Community Engagement
• Maintenance
• Design
• Diversity
If the Public Art Review Board recommends approval of this proposal, it will be presented
to the City Council for consideration and approval.
DISCUSSION
In January 2025, the City issued a call for applications for organizations to design a
mural for the Pickleweed Library Children’s Room (Attachment 1). This mural was
intended to be installed as part of the interior renovation of the branch library, which is
estimated to be complete in Spring/Summer 2026.
Youth in Arts (YIA) was selected to collaborate with youth from the Canal neighborhood
to design a mural for the project. The mural, titled "Our Community, Our Story," has
been designed and will be printed on vinyl and installed in the library once renovations
are complete.
The final piece is a collage that integrates acrylic paint, watercolor, colored pencil, and
pen. Each artist contributed individual statement pieces, such as the birds, people, and
play structure, which were then pasted onto the mural to create a unified design. This
process allowed each teen artist to express their unique perspective while contributing
to a shared community narrative.
For nearly 54 years, Youth in Arts has provided high-quality arts education to students
of all backgrounds and abilities. YIA’s mission is to foster creativity and confidence
among youth, particularly through their I AM program, which supports emerging artists
by providing them with opportunities to work alongside professional artists and engage
in community-based public art projects. Through I AM, young artists from Marin, ages
14 to 19, are selected to design and create public art installations that contribute to the
aesthetic and cultural vibrancy of their communities.
The mural design is complete, and has been reviewed by the Pickleweed Advisory
Committee, enabling it to move forward to the Public Art Review Board for review.
Pickleweed Advisory Committee members responded with enthusiasm, expressing
strong support for the project and appreciation that the artists had personal ties to the
Canal neighborhood and were encouraged to incorporate their own ideas into the
design. While a couple members asked questions on specific elements, such as the
single DNA strand and the airplane, Youth in Arts staff provided helpful clarification on
the artistic choices and their connection to the mural’s themes. Overall, the Committee’s
feedback was overwhelmingly positive and affirmed the mural’s reflection of community
identity and youth creativity. The mural designed by YIA students reflects their
collaboration with the Canal neighborhood community and exemplifies the program’s
goals of enhancing local spaces while promoting youth voices and creativity.

Image: Mural - Our Community, Our Story
Process for Developing the Artwork
The mural, titled "Our Community, Our Story," was developed through an extensive and
thoughtful community engagement process. The Youth in Arts (YIA) team interviews
with library staff, local designers, and community members to better understand the role
of the Pickleweed Library in the lives of its users. Conversations with librarians focused
on how the space has historically been used and how it is expected to function following
the upcoming renovation.
To further inform the project, the YIA team spent time at the nearby Pickleweed Park,
engaging directly with families and children who frequently visit the library. These
interactions provided insight into the community’s values, aspirations, and cultural
identity. In addition, the team studied nearby public art installations, including murals at
Bahia Vista Elementary School and on the exterior of the Pickleweed Community
Center. These references helped inspire the mural’s direction and ensure it aligned with
the visual language of the surrounding area.
About the Artists
The mural design was led by YIA’s Visual Arts Teaching Artist, Ali Vaughan, who
worked closely with a core group of five teen artists. Four of these artists are San Rafael
High School students and past participants of YIA’s Intensive Arts Mentorship Program
(I AM). Several of these artists have strong personal ties to the Canal neighborhood,
having grown up visiting the center and playing in the park. The design process
reflected their lived experiences and their deep connection to the community, ensuring
that the mural would resonate with local residents and visitors alike.
Project Readiness and Timeline: If approved by the Public Art Review Board, the
mural will be reproduced on vinyl and installed in the Children’s Room at the Pickleweed
Library (Attachment 3) following the completion of the library’s renovation, expected in
the spring or summer of 2026.
Project Funding: The City allocated $12,500 for the design and development of the
mural. The estimated cost for production and installation at the Pickleweed Library is an
additional $2,500.
Community Engagement: This project is the culmination of a collaborative partnership
between Youth In Arts and the City of San Rafael’s Library and Recreation Department.
Maintenance: No maintenance needs or expenses are anticipated for the duration of
the installation.
Design: The final mural design was crafted to reflect the culture, values, and lived
experiences of the Pickleweed community. It incorporates culturally significant symbols,
themes of learning and growth, and locally recognizable features to foster a sense of
belonging and connection for visitors. Elements such as California poppies, native birds,
and illustrations of nearby landmarks, including Pickleweed Park and the Community
Center, ground the mural in its physical and cultural context.
Imaginative and symbolic motifs are also woven throughout the design. A quetzal, a bird
native to Central America, are included to honor the area's significant Guatemalan
population. The mural unfolds from a large storybook, symbolizing the role of storytelling
and education in shaping vibrant, resilient communities. The narrative flows from left to
right, illustrating children in various stages of development, ultimately culminating in the
image of a high school graduate walking confidently toward a bright future, represented
by the rising sun.
Diversity: The mural "Our Community, Our Story" aligns with Diversity guidelines by
highlighting the unique, multifaceted identities of community members who engage with
the Pickleweed Library. Through extensive community engagement, the mural’s design
reflects cultural symbols and local traditions, ensuring that diverse voices are
represented. By incorporating elements that acknowledge the area’s culture, as well as
local landmarks, flora, and fauna, the artwork fosters a sense of belonging and
celebrates the cultural richness of the community. This inclusive approach not only
honors diversity but also reinforces the value of education and imagination in shaping a
brighter future for all.

Overview
The City of San Rafael is seeking applications from qualified organizations to develop youth-led
artwork for a mural in the Pickleweed Branch Library Children’s Room. Pickleweed Library is
located in the Canal neighborhood, a vibrant and diverse area that has traditionally been
marked by socio-economic disparities compared to the rest of San Rafael. Pickleweed Library is
2,000 square feet, co-located with the Albert J. Boro Community Center and within Pickleweed
Community Park, and serves a local community of over 12,000 residents. The facility is heavily
utilized and is an important resource for a predominantly Spanish-speaking community.
Project Description
Pickleweed Library is scheduled for renovation starting Summer 2025 through Spring 2026. The
renovation will include a complete interior re-design of the space to better meet community
needs, improve the patron experience, and maximize space. An important component of the
project is creating a dedicated children’s room, that includes space for a community mural.
The mural will be on a curved wall that is approximately 5’8½” high and 10’ 9½” wide. The
artwork will be installed on printed vinyl so that it could easily be updated and refreshed over
time. The exact specifications of the installation will be determined in collaboration with the
successful applicant.
The goal of the mural is to engage and represent the local community and its youth. The City is
seeking an organization to lead a collaborative process with Canal resident youth to create the
proposed artwork. While the applicant will be responsible for proposing a process to develop the
artwork, the City will prioritize applications that engage greater numbers of Canal resident youth,
provide for a range of participation opportunities, and a propose a final product developed by
youth artists.
Project Budget
The City has identified a maximum of $10,000 in total project funding, inclusive of the fabrication
and installation of the mural.

Item #3b
TITLE: 2026 ART EXHIBITOR PROPOSALS FOR FALKIRK CULTURAL CENTER
RECOMMENDATION:
That the Board review art exhibition proposals and allocate Falkirk Exhibit space to
selected artists for the 2026 Exhibit season.
BACKGROUND:
The City of San Rafael operates the Falkirk Cultural Center (Falkirk), located at 1408
Mission Avenue at E Street. The Center is an 11.2-acre property, comprised of an elegant
three-story California Victorian historic home, park grounds, and gardens maintained by
the Marin Master Gardeners.
Falkirk serves as a site of historical heritage, listed on the National Historic Register, and
for many, Falkirk Cultural Center plays a unique role within the community of San Rafael.
Falkirk programs are coordinated by a City of San Rafael Program Coordinator through
the Library & Recreation Department. The City has an agreement with the Marin Master
Gardeners through the University of California Regents Marin County Cooperative
Extension to operate the Falkirk Greenhouse and maintain several garden plots on the
grounds. Falkirk serves as a desirable venue for weddings and other life events and
offers a variety of contract classes such as Plein Air painting, watercolors, and other art
focused programs and activities.
In addition to the previously mentioned programs, Falkirk houses a contemporary art
gallery and an educational center for cultural arts. Art Exhibits at Falkirk are popular and
an important part of the City of San Rafael’s Public Art Program. Falkirk has exhibited the
work of Bay Area collective groups such as the California Watercolor Association,
California Society of Printmakers, BayWood Artists, the Association of Clay and Glass
Artists, Guerrilla Girls, Terra Linda Ceramic Artists, and many more. The gallery is open
to the public during regular hours Tuesday-Friday from 1:00pm-4:30pm, Saturdays from
10:00am-2:00pm, and during the Downtown San Rafael Second Friday Art Walks. Exhibit
hours may be modified due to holidays and/or private event rentals. Most art exhibits
include an opening reception that coincides with one of Downtown’s Second Friday Art
Walks.
Falkirk Art Exhibitions typically attract an average of 200 visitors over the duration of each
exhibit. Staff are available during exhibit hours to answer questions, show the facility and
grounds, and make the rooms available during art exhibits. Falkirk typically hosts five or
six art exhibits each year, depending on availability, size of show, rental schedules, and
seasonal schedules.
Artist and Exhibit Selection Process
The City allocates exhibit space through open Calls For Artists and plans several juried
exhibits each calendar year. Juried Shows are curated by City staff and other local artists
in the community. City staff reserve the right to finalize all installation decisions including
final curatorial decisions, exhibit layout, displays, labeling, confirming required insurance
coverage, appropriate security, lighting, staffing during hours of operation, artwork sales,
and marketing plans, based on program needs.
Historically, Falkirk welcomed exhibition proposals on an ongoing basis throughout the
year and didn’t receive a high volume of proposals. Beginning in 2023, the City began an
annual Call For Artists and planned exhibits on a calendar year basis. This process has
led to an increased volume of proposals and artist engagement.
In 2025, the City received 19 proposals for a ‘Call for Artists’ to assign exhibit space. City
staff selected two exhibits based on program need, and four exhibits were allocated to
eleven (11) different artists or collectives through the PARB process. The Winter Juried
Exhibition received 219 entries from 93 Bay Area artists and the exhibition included 99
pieces from 67 artists. Forty-seven students from the Terra Linda Ceramic Artists
program exhibited in the spring.

DISCUSSION
For 2026, staff have pre-selected three exhibit blocks based on program needs. Three
exhibit blocks are available for allocation through the PARB selection process. To fill the
Page 3 of 5
available exhibit dates, City staff released a ‘Call For Artists’ in August 2025 which was
sent to hundreds of artists, community groups, and organizations, with a deadline of
September 22, 2025. The 2026 exhibit schedule of availability is shown below.

Artists were asked to submit a brief application which included examples of the artwork, a
description of the exhibit proposal, and bios with any relevant information about the
artist(s) or the group they represent. Additionally, artists were asked some supplemental
questions about whether they reside or work in San Rafael or Marin County, whether they
are willing to comply with the Falkirk Cultural Center Art Exhibit Guidelines (Attachment
1), and whether they would be willing to share exhibit space.
The City received 15 high-quality proposals. Because there is limited space available,
staff assigned weighted point values to each of the criteria below to assess eligibility and
rank proposals:
1. Is the artist willing to comply with Falkirk Exhibit Guidelines? (Required)
2. Is the artist available during at least one of the available exhibit blocks? (Required)
3. Did the artist submit a complete and thorough proposal, including all requested
information? (40 pts)
4. Does the artist(s) reside in or create their work in the City of San Rafael? (15 pts)
5. Do staff feel the proposal is logistically feasible? (10 pts)
6. Does the artist(s) reside in Marin County? (10 pts)
7. Is the proposal a group exhibit showcasing multiple artists? (10 pts)
8. Is the artist willing to share the three available rooms during an exhibit block? If so,
how many rooms will the exhibit require? (Up to 10 pts)
9. Has the artist or group exhibited at Falkirk in the last three years? (5 pts if no)
Based on these criteria, staff determined that all the proposals met initial eligibility
requirements. Staff have assigned a score to each proposal but recommend the Public
Art Review Board consider all 15 proposals for possible exhibit space during one of the
three available blocks of time.
Criteria for Proposal Evaluation
The artists’ proposals (Attachment 1) demonstrate varying availability, artistic mediums,
and room space requirements. To help Staff recommend the Board review the proposals
and make a recommendation to City staff to allocate 1 or more rooms to the exhibitors
Page 4 of 5
that best utilize the Falkirk exhibit space, best meet community needs, and best align with
the Public Art Review Guidelines.
Three artists expressed exclusive use of all three galleries and would not want to share
the space. All the other artists expressed a willingness to share exhibit space, however,
some proposals indicated they may prefer more than 1 room. There are three rooms at
Falkirk that could be allocated individually, or artists could be allocated up to all three
rooms at the discretion of the Board. The rooms are all located on the second floor of the
facility. The East Room is approximately 71 square feet, the Tamalpais Room is
approximately 123 square feet, and the West Room is approximately 60 square feet. The
size of these rooms is approximate as there is a fireplace in each room, multiple windows,
and the rooms are irregularly shaped. Falkirk has 20 pedestals of various sizes for
exhibition use.

Art Exhibitions – Proposal for November 2026
Show Title: Reverie
We propose an exhibition by three San Rafael-based artists, Gail Caulfield, Kay Russell, and
Rainey Straus, whose practices cultivate deep relationships with the natural world. Through
painting, sculpture, and installation, our work reflects ongoing dialogue with the ecosystems of
Northern California, places we know through close observation and lived experience.
Our artmaking honors intimate dialogue with place, the smooth bark of a madrone tree, a
waterfall rushing over worn rocks, or the renewal of a fire-scarred trail in Point Reyes translating
them into visual form. In times of ecological uncertainty, we are mindful of the solace nature
provides and the fragility of these bonds. The philosopher Glenn Albrecht names this
experience solastalgia: the grief of witnessing the loss of beloved environments. Our work
acknowledges that grief while affirming the wonder and reciprocity still possible in relationship
with place.
Each artist grounds her practice in place. Caulfield’s ceramic wall reliefs draw from her
reverence for trees, their endurance, resilience, and vulnerability. Russell’s layered watercolor
paintings and collages emerge from her long connection with the Sierra, combining recollection
with evolving observations of familiar landscapes. Straus’s interdisciplinary practice engages
Marin and Point Reyes, where she collaborates with ecological processes to create
biodegradable installations exploring time, decay, and renewal.
Installed throughout Falkirk’s historic galleries, the exhibition will feature paintings, wall-mounted
ceramic reliefs, and sculptural installations suspended from the ceiling and arranged on the
floor. Together, these works create a relationship between interior and exterior, human-made
and natural, fragile and enduring. By sharing what has enriched our lives, we hope to inspire
viewers to rediscover their connections to Northern California's forests, waters, and wild
places—finding beauty, renewal, and reverence for the living world.

Artist Bios
Gail Caulfield is a Bay Area artist whose practice explores the intelligence, resilience, and
fragility of trees through ceramic sculpture and watercolor. Working primarily with clay, she
creates wall reliefs and sculptural forms that honor the tactile beauty of bark and the life-giving
presence of forests. Her watercolors extend this inquiry into close-up studies of the natural
world, moving between representation and abstraction.
Her connection to trees deepened after she encountered the exhibition Trees at Fondation
Cartier in Paris where the video of Stefano Mancuso, Italian botanist, awakened her to the
sentience and interdependence of forest systems. Since then, Caulfield’s work has focused on
translating this awareness into visual form, creating pieces that invite reflection on both kinship
and vulnerability in human–nature relations.
Caulfield has exhibited her work in group shows throughout Northern California, and in 2023,
shifted her professional focus from a long career as a psychotherapist and art therapist to
dedicate more time to her studio practice. Earlier in her career, she taught ceramics at San
Francisco State University, College of Marin, and the Academy of Art in San Francisco, and was
artist-in-residence at the San Francisco Art Institute, Artpark in New York, and at San Quentin
Prison through a grant from the California Arts Council. She holds graduate degrees in both art
and psychology and is also a certified mindfulness meditation teacher.
Kay Russell is a painter who works with watercolor, gouache, monotype, collage, and thread.
Her images are a combination of representation entwined with interpretation. Watercolors are
used additively and subtractively, with liberal use of gouache. This painting process allows a
conversation between subject and artist, a banter allowing the artist to participate with nature in
decisions about line, shape, color, texture, and pattern. Her practice reflects a long relationship
with the Sierra Nevada, where she draws observations of rock, water, and light for inspiration.
Russell has exhibited widely in local and national venues, including the Triton Museum of Art,
the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the Bolinas Museum, the Crocker Art Museum, Marin
Museum of Contemporary Art, Art Works Downtown, Falkirk Cultural Center, and the San
Francisco International Airport. She has also curated exhibitions and worked in curatorial roles
at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco and the San Francisco International Airport.
In addition to her studio practice, Russell has had an extensive teaching career. She is a
tenured professor at City College of San Francisco. She has taught at California College of the
Arts, UC Berkeley, San Francisco State University, the de Young Museum Art School, and
Wright State University. She holds an MFA in Painting.
Rainey Straus is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice centers on cultivating kinship with the
more-than-human world through painting, photography, sculpture, and installation. Her recent
series, The Old Growth Project, was exhibited at the Marin Museum of Contemporary Art and
featured in Forest Unseen at the Petaluma Arts Center, The New Geologic Epoch with
Ecoartspace, and Art & Ecology at the O’Hanlon Center for the Arts. Her upcoming project,
Spinning Time into Form, will be presented at Gallery Route One in Point Reyes Station in
spring 2026.
Straus recently returned from the BigCi Environmental Residency in New South Wales,
Australia, and was an artist-in-residence at the Morris Graves Foundation and the Lucid Art
Foundation in 2024. Earlier work has been shown at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, the San
Jose Museum of Art, and the Design Exchange Museum in Toronto. Her practice has been
featured in Dark Mountain Journal, Sculpture Magazine, Rhizome, Videogames and Art (edited
by Andy Clarke and Grethe Mitchell), the San Francisco Chronicle, and the San Jose Mercury
News. She holds a BFA in Painting from SUNY Purchase and an MFA in Sculpture from
California College of the Arts.

1.A brief, one-peage description of the exhibition explainting the overall theme and scope.
This show, "SPACES: A Shared Perspective," expands upon my ongoing body of work,
"SPACES." This series explores the intimate and varied environments where art is born,
from traditional studios to the more unconventional spaces artists carve out for
themselves. This exhibition, however, is a collaboration. I’ve invited the artists featured
in my studio portraits to join me, and their work will hang alongside my paintings,
creating a dynamic dialogue between our creations.
This show is a testament to the rich diversity of artistic practice in the Bay Area. My
"studio portraits" reveal the unique, often personal, environments that nurture
creativity, while the accompanying artwork offers a glimpse into the diverse styles and
subjects these spaces produce. It's a look behind the curtain, showcasing the vast range
of work being made here and the equally diverse places where it comes to life.
My inspiration for this work is a lineage of artists who have focused on the spaces of
creation, most famously Diego Velazquez’s “Las Meninas” which depicts himself in his
studio, Rembrandt’s introspective self-portraits within his studio and Van Gogh’s
vibrant depictions of his living and working quarters. I am also interested in the
interiors painted by more recent artists Antonio Lopez Garcia, Peter Van Dyck, and
Carlos San Millan. I aim to continue this tradition in a contemporary context,
highlighting the vital role these environments play in the artistic journey.
A core intention of this exhibition is to foster a spirit of mutual support rather than
competition. The art world can often feel like a zero-sum game, with artists vying for
gallery representation, studio space, and recognition. With this show, my hope is to
model a different way forward. By coming together and sharing our work, we can
support each other's growth, and rise together. The show is a visual representation of
how cooperation, not competition, is the path to building a more resilient and

Spence Snyder is a Bay Area native who has been exhibiting work since 2013 in both solo and
group shows. His show "Our Nature", shown virtually during the pandemic, was featured in the
Marin IJ and spolighted the wild spaces outside his window – paintings of various birds, plants
and rocks. The show questioned humankinds’ predilection toward control of the natural world
and our stewardship abilities. His 2025 show “Spaces” is a collection of "studio portraits"
exploring the diverse environments where artists create and highlights the critical need for
affordable Bay Area artist spaces. His painting "Kelly's Space" was named "Curators Choice" in
the 2025 Salon at the Triton exhibit at the Triton Museum in Santa Clara.

Kirstine Reiner Hansen, originally from Denmark, shows regularly at the Jack Fischer Gallery
in San Francisco. In 2012 she received the Lillian Orlowsky and William Freed Foundation Grant
and was twice a semi-finalist for the Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition. She has been
featured in Juxtapoz Magazine, BloPop Magazine and the Asian Curator as well as in the book
‘Distrupted Realism’ by John Seed, 2019.

Chris Leib is an anthropology graduate that went on to become a fine artist renowned for his
depictions of Bonobo chimps, astronauts, cosmonauts and royalty. His paintings are laden with
meaning, humor and premonitions of the future while looking to the past.

Shannon Abbey is a painter based in Sonoma County where she paints colorful landscapes
and wildlife in her backyard studio alongside her trusty companion Mollie. She is inspired by
the natural world of the North Bay, combining representation with abstraction.

Cuong Nguyen who started his training as a portrait artist in Vietnam at age 10, creates
realistic and moody paintings by expertly using light and shadow. He believes a painting is
only successful if he first connects emotionally with the subject, which then allows the viewer to
connect with the work. Cuong has been invited to teach around the globe, in places such as
China, Italy, Belgium, Spain, Argentina and Mexico and has won many awards for his
paintings, including Prix de Pastel at the IAPS’s 2011 Master Circle Exhibition and Grand Prize
Award 2010 Pastel Journal Magazine.

Kathyrn Keller is an artist who moves between various styles and mediums, from semi-realism
to abstraction. She uses layers of paint and intricate color transitions to create a sense of
depth and visual interest, exposing the history of the works' creation.

Susan Daniels, Ph.D.
Susan has been a K-8 teacher, a camp director, and a professor of education and psychology. The
favorite class she taught was “Psychology of Creativity” for teachers and school psychologists.
She is particularly interested in creating creative spaces and helping others develop expressions of
their own “personal creativity.”
As a mixed media artist, Susan’s favorite art language is the language of color, and she enjoys
layering, textures, text, and patterns to evoke personal expression of the creative process - spanning
thresholds in the process.
Susan has exhibited twice at the Falkirk - most recently with the Second Friday Art Salon’s
exploration of “Beauty and Her Shadow.”
She has had an individual mixed media exhibit at the Loggia Gallery at the Berkeley City Club on “A
Muse in the Garden.”
She will have her second individual exhibit at the Loggia Gallery with a working title of “Oh, Flower,
What Message Do You Hold?” - a mixed media exploration of design, patter, color and text.
Nicole Grace Forestier
Nicole Grace Forestier is an artist working and living in the Bay Area, California.
Born in San Francisco and growing up in the countryside of Napa Valley, she started
creating art as soon as she could hold a crayon in her hand. Her earliest memories
consist of holding a paintbrush, the smell of Elmer's glue in the air, and the floor
covered in glitter. At a young age she was captivated by storytelling and creating
fictional worlds, then bringing them to fruition through her art. She uses mixed media,
including different types of painting and drawing, to create her art. She continued her
practice through High School in Mill Valley and later at College of Marin, where she
gained her Associate’s degree in Fine Art. While at College of Marin, she participated in
exhibitions and publications. She went on to UC Berkeley, where she earned an
interdisciplinary Bachelor’s degree, designing a course of study that combined the
studies of politics and philosophy with art history. During this time, she was a part of a
group exhibition at the Falkirk Gallery. As of late, her artistic attention is focused on
themes related to identity, memory, and as always, nature and the mystical. Overall, the
goal is always to create art that will make the viewer feel something. Going forward,
she is excited to be included in the ‘Emerging Artists’ program at the Mill Valley Fall
Arts Festival and have her art in a booth this Fall.
Shows:
● Future: Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival, ‘Emerging Artists’. September 20-21 2025.
● ‘Beauty and Her Shadow’ Exhibition, November 8–December 13 2024. Falkirk
Cultural Center, San Rafael, CA.

● Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival. Volunteered every year from 2017 to 2019, then
2021-2023. Showed my art from 2017-2019.
Maeve O’Sullivan
Maeve is an artist living and working in the Bay Area. She has studied at San Francisco State,
Université Aix Marseille, and College of Marin graduating with degrees in Sociology, French,
and Fine Art. Working primarily in figurative oil painting, her portraits express human feelings
that encourage the viewer to understand and connect from a place of depth within themself. She
is especially interested in confronting depictions of women-as-muse in the history of European
oil paintings. Through her work, she examines the effects of these images on the female psyche
and challenges cultural understandings of femininity. Unlike traditional depictions of the
objectified nude, her portraits of women meet the viewer’s gaze with awareness—expressive,
self-possessed, and resistant to being reduced or projected upon.

Sarah worked in watercolor earlier in her life, but had to stop painting due to a very painful,
debilitating condition that restricted the use of her hands and fingers. After a number of years,
she slowly return to art as an avenue of self-discovery and healing. She started with Drawing
and Composition in 2017, then took her first painting class with Chester Arnold in 2018 and fell
in love with oil painting. She went on to complete her AA in Art at College of Marin in 2023.

At the heart of my work lies a deep-seated fascination with the beauty of nature. I am
constantly inspired by the world around us. My paintings are influenced by nature, her
emotions, and inner thoughts that are continually growing and evolving. Motivation stems from
continued exploration, observing the multifaceted aspect of nature and life.
My current artistic expression in painting represents the culmination of my diverse life
experiences. This journey has taken me from studying at the American Academy of Art to
traveling across Europe, Mexico, and the Far East. Additionally, my professional endeavors as
a stylist in the film and print industries, alongside my work as an interior designer, have
profoundly influenced my creative vision.
Art is more than just a medium for self-expression; it’s a way of seeing and experiencing
nature, it’s universal creation and a way of connecting with others on a deep, personal,
meaningful level.

Falkirk Exhibit Proposal
Adrienne Biggs, BOOKAGAMI
(preferred exhibit dates November – December 2025)
Link to my submission:
https://storage.googleapis.com/proudcity/sanrafaelca/2025/0
7/RFP-2026-Art-Exhibitions-FILLABLE.pdf
Overall Theme & Scope:
This unique exhibit will feature dozens of hand-folded book sculptures created by
longtime San Rafael resident Adrienne Biggs, who calls her creations
Bookagami. Her inventive and meditative practice of folding books repurposes
forgotten or discarded pages into whimsical three-dimensional masterpieces that
offers books a renewed relevancy with an aspirational nod toward sustainability
and the Circular Economy movement.
Adrienne has hand-folded more than 600 Bookgami, the majority of them right
here in San Rafael.
Her Atlas, 1963: You Are Here won First Place Blue Ribbon at the 2024 Marin
County Fair, and her Bug-a-Gami totem won Third Place in 2025. Her first two-
month public art show was in 2024 at Town Books in San Anselmo and her two-
month show at Marelli's in downtown San Rafael runs through October, 2025.
She was interviewed about her background, life and Bookagami work for a two-
page feature article in the September 11, 2025 issue of the Pacific Sun, the
nation's longest running weekly newspaper with a 20,000 circulation throughout
Marin and Sonoma counties. Article is here: https://pacificsun.com/into-the-fold-
bookagami-transforms-pages-into-sculpture/
If chosen for an exhibit at Falkirk in November and December 2025, it would be
very easy to transport and transition the artworks from their current exhibit at
Marelli's on Fourth Street (which ends October 31) to Falkirk!
Samples in Digital Form:
I will attach images to an email and send it to falkirk@cityofsanrafael.org, as
instructed above. You can also see many Bookagami images on Instagram
@IntoTheFoldBookagami.
Artist Bio:
San Rafael resident ADRIENNE BIGGS is a second-generation Californian,
lifelong violinist, and former book publishing professional. She holds a BA in
Humanities and Violin Performance from Pepperdine University and has lived in
Marin since 1995. She has always been in love with books, especially when re-
envisioned as literary artwork.
After raising her daughter and while continuing to build multiple successful small
businesses in Marin, since Spring 2024 Adrienne has created more than 600
unique “Bookagami” (as she calls them). Her Atlas, 1963: You Are Here won
First Place Blue Ribbon at the 2024 Marin County Fair, and her Bug-a-Gami
totem won Third Place in 2025. Her first two-month public art show was in 2024
at Town Books in San Anselmo and her two-month show at Marelli's in downtown
San Rafael runs through October, 2025.
Adrienne has hosted multiple public and private Bookagami Social Events and
Workshops in Marin since 2024, with the goal of fostering artistic inclinations
within this community while rescuing books from landfill by repurposing these
common two-dimensional objects into three-dimensional works of art that people
of all ages can enjoy, create, and share.

WHAT IS
BOOKAGAMI?
Book Folding is a global art genre.
I call my creations “Bookagami”.
No glue, no scissors, no stress.
Every piece takes up to three hours to
complete (I’ve folded nearly 700 so far).
Each one is hand-folded here in Marin.
Most of the books are rescued from
local free boxes and landfill.
Making Bookagami makes me happy.

2. Description of the Theme and Scope of the Exhibit:
In this exhibit, I am sharing my work from recent years. As a representational landscape
and figurative painter, I made efforts along the traditions of Realism to present intimate
connection I made with the land I live on and the people I surround myself with. The more I
look around, the more I find what a fortune and what a privilege I have to live on this land.
For me, making art from her is my way of paying tribute to the land and her people. The
exhibit also includes work inspired by my domestic and foreign travels. From my view, many
of the compositions were from the scenes so beautifully presented themselves that begged
for being painted. Many times I found myself not up to the tasks. But I cannot help but
giving my voice (my brushes) a best try! Any outcome from the effort is a personal
statement!
3. Bio:
Drawing and painting was part of his formative years in life, Ruan started his art career as a
watercolorist 20 years ago. Since then he has won top prizes in juried shows. Many of his
works are privately collected. Ruan has since broadened his horizon by painting in other
medium. With solid foundation in draftsmanship and composition, now his main media is
oil with landscape and figurative work. Ruan was juried exhibiting artist member of
California Art Club, California Art League and Valley Watercolor Society.

Creative Concept: Deep Secrets
My latest collection of paintings was born out of my love and admiration of the Pacific
Ocean.
Coral reefs are among the greatest natural wonders of the world. They come in
a seemingly infinite array of shapes and colors and teem with life. These qualities gave
me the freedom to experiment with abstract graphic elements and a strong color palette
helped me capture their amazing beauty.
About coral reefs...
Coral reefs are fragile ecosystems, and even a slight change in their marine habitat
could drastically impact the corals, and other marine life too. One of the main threats to
the reefs is climate change. As global warming occurs through out the world, the ocean
waters will also start to get warmer. Even 2 degrees Celsius change in the water can
have a massive impact on the corals. The corals can feel this slight change and will start
to feel stressed, and their first natural reaction is to expel their symbiotic zooxanthellae
since this algae is not a part of them. The corals at this stage are now hopeless without
their symbiotic partner, and will not be able to survive without our intervention.
Around 30 – 40 % of all corals reefs have been destroyed in the past fifty years due to
human activity, and unless we change, the reefs will continually get damaged, until they
cannot recover anymore. But of course, humans are not the only threat to the reef (even
if they are the biggest threat), nature also has ways that it damages the reefs. Powerful
winds from hurricanes and cyclones can smash corals, and extremely intense storms
can also break them down. But all these natural disasters only last for so long, and
corals will soon be able to recover and grow back once more.
However, if the human activity doesn’t change its course, the fantastic beauty of coral
reefs and thousands of species will be lost forever to future generations. We need to
remind the public daily of this danger and possible tragic loss.
Background
I’m a graduate of School of Art and Design in Uherske Hradiste, Czechoslovakia,
where I studied painting. I continued my studies at University of F. Palacky in
Olomouc, Czechoslovakia, where I studied Art and Czech literature. I graduated
with Masters’ Degrees in both, Art and Literature.
After the graduation I left Czechoslovalia and emigrated to United States. I was
extremely lucky that I could apply my art education to a professional career in
this country. For 38 years, I worked for several great NYC advertising agencies
as an art director.
I started to paint again about 20 years ago. I participated in many group
exhibitions, but I also had solo shows. I moved to California in 2016 when joined
Marin MOCA and Art Works Downtown.
MARIE KRAJAN Art Resume
I spent my formative years in the former Czechoslovakia and studied painting at
the School of Art and Design in Uherske Hradiste. Upon graduating, I continued my
studies at the University of F. Palacky in Olomouc where I majored in Art and Czech
literature. I emigrated to the U.S. in 1972.
Here, I built a career in advertising as an art director at various well known New
York City ad agencies. While in New York, I painted portraits but preferred
landscapes and floral still lives. Several years ago, I moved to California where I’m
endlessly inspired by the sun, landscape and lively art scene. Recently, I’ve embarked
on a new path of greater creative freedom through abstract expression. I’ve
participated in numerous exhibitions in New York and now in California, centered in
Marin County.
In 2019, I created the Deep Secrets Series, celebrating coral reef habitats. With their
seemingly infinite array of shapes and colors, teeming with life, the beauty and
diversity of the coral reefs provided me with the freedom to experiment with
abstract graphic elements and a strong color palette.
In 2020, I was working on a series of paintings originally inspired by the Northern
Lights, nature’s light show and a beautiful display of colors and shapes. These
paintings represent an important step towards abstract expressionism. I hope the
viewers will be excited by the selection of colors and drawn in by the free-flowing
shapes and overall harmony.
In 2021, I began work on a series using geometric shapes and water-based acrylic
sprays, with various shapes cut out of paper. Going back to basics! As a designer,
I enjoy composing the image shape by shape, adding one color at a time without
feeling the need for a clear vision of the final result. It’s great fun!

Art Exhibitions – Request for Proposal for 2026
1.A brief, one-page description of the exhibition explaining its overall theme and scope.
“Love Letters to the Ocean” presents a collection of watercolor paintings that
celebrate the artist's deep emotional connection to coastal landscapes around
the world.
Artistic Vision and Theme:
Just as love letters capture fleeting emotions and preserve precious moments,
these watercolors freeze ephemeral coastal scenes in time: the golden hour light
dancing across Maui's shores, the dramatic cliffs of Big Sur meeting endless
blue, the serene morning mist over the Santa Cruz Mountains. Each piece is both
a documentation of place and an expression of reverence for the natural world.
The choice of watercolor as the primary medium is intentional and symbolic. Like
the ocean itself, watercolor is fluid, unpredictable, and luminous. The medium's
inherent transparency mirrors the way light moves through water, while its
spontaneous flowing qualities echo the organic movement of waves and tides.
Geographic Scope and Artistic Journey:
The exhibition encompasses twelve years of artistic exploration across diverse
coastal landscapes. From the volcanic shores of Hawaii's Oahu and Maui to the
windswept beaches of Northern California – including Big Sur, San Gregorio, and
San Francisco – each location has contributed unique lessons in light, color, and
atmosphere. The collection also features works inspired by Japan's Shimanami
Kaido.
The Hawaiian pieces capture the brilliant turquoise and sapphire hues of tropical
waters, while the California works explore the rugged beauty of the Pacific
Coast's fog-shrouded mystery.
Environmental Consciousness and Contemporary Relevance:
"Love Letters to the Ocean" arrives at a crucial moment in our planet's
environmental history. As climate change threatens coastal ecosystems
worldwide, these paintings serve as both celebration and elegy – honoring the
beauty that exists while acknowledging its fragility.
Visual Impact and Emotional Resonance:
The collected works create an immersive environment where turquoise waters,
golden sunrises, and lush coastal mountains transport viewers beyond the gallery
walls. The paintings' luminous quality – achieved through careful layering of
transparent watercolor washes – captures the ethereal beauty of light on water
that draws millions to coastlines worldwide. Each piece functions independently
as a window to a specific moment and place, while collectively they create a
meditation on the universal human need for beauty, wonder, and connection to
nature.
The exhibition invites viewers to see through the artist's eyes and perhaps write
their own love letters to the places that move them. In our increasingly digital
world, these analog expressions of wonder offer a necessary pause – a moment
to remember that our most profound relationships often exist not with technology,
but with the elemental forces that sustain all life.

3. Bios and relevant information about the artist(s) or the group submitting the proposal.
Grace Lihn has been painting watercolors for over 12 years, traveling the world with
brush in hand to capture the luminous beauty of coastal landscapes.
From California's rugged coastline to Hawaii's sandy shores, she paints turquoise
waters, lush mountains, and golden sunsets that bring joy and color into viewers’
lives. Her work has been exhibited at The Yard in Redwood City, where her
paintings were well-received by the local community. In addition to her watercolor
practice, Grace creates ceramics that bring the same attention to natural beauty
into three-dimensional form.
Based in Mountain View, California, she is currently pursuing an MBA in
Sustainability at the University of Redlands Presidio Center for Sustainable
Solutions while continuing to create art that celebrates our natural world.
