My reasons for wanting to serve are:
My reasons for wanting to serve are simple: I have a strong desire to improve the bicycle and pedestrian
experience here in San Rafael for both our residents, and for those visiting our community. That includes
improvements to safety, accessibility, infrastructure, and simply the general biker and walker
experience.
I am a resident of the Montecito Neighborhood, and really enjoy the ability to walk and bike throughout
our town. I also see a lot of room for improvement. I think that walk -able and bike -able communities not
only improve quality of life and public health, but contribute to vibrant commercial corridors and a
community's sense of pride. I am a strong advocate for incentivizing other residents to take advantage
of our walk -able and bike -able town and think that while we have something to be proud of, there is a
lot more that we could do to make the experience safer, easier, and more enjoyable. I would be
honored to help serve as a citizen advocate for the implementation of the City's Bicycle/Pedestrian
Master Plan, as well as other bicycle and pedestrian improvements.
I have been a long-time cyclist and resident of the Bay Area and understand •the challenges •faced by
cyclists in the community. During the week, I am an Environmental Planner and Project Manager at a
technical services consulting firm, and have worked to help implement planning directives in other Bay
Area •communities. As a rather new resident to San Rafael, a soon-to-be first time parent,, and relatively
young member of the community, I think I would bring a unique and representative perspective of San
Rafael's and Marin County's growing contingency of young fames that will ultimately be enjoying the
bicycle and pedestrian improvements you implement. I would like to work hard to help San Rafael be
the best it can. I hope that you will consider my application for the vacant committee position, and I look
forward tohearing from you.

San Rafael is the urban center and heartbeat of Marin County. With the coming of
the Smart Train into San Rafael and the completion of the line to Larkspur now a reality,
planning for a multi -use path adjacent to the train will be critical to a safe, sustainable and
livable downtown and vital to a prosperous business community.
It appears that over $20 million in RM 2 funds from bridge tolls are being allocated to
multi -use path improvements including the completion of the path from the San Rafael
Transit Center to the Cal Park Tunnel. This is a vital link of the North South Greenway
which will eventually run from the Golden Gate Bridge to Cloverdale.
The North South Greenway intersects with the proposed Fairfax to San Rafael Cross
Marin Bikeway. These two primary bicycle arteries will literally make San Rafael the cross
roads of biking and pedestrian activity for Marin.
My experience as an owner of the Panama Hotel and my background as a real estate
and land use lawyer should be useful to the committee. I am also a former Corte Madera
BPAC member and founding member of Marin Deserves Better (an advocacy group for
responsible transportation planning). I believe that I have demonstrated an ability to bring
people together and achieve consensus.
If selected, I will advocate for the best possible designs and work to engage the San
Rafael community including the schools and businesses as the mayor and council make
these critical decisions.

Dear Mr. Miller:
On behalf of the San Rafael City Council, I would like to take this opportunity to thank
you for your recent application for appointment to the San Rafael Bicycle and Pedestrian
Advisory Committee.
It was the consensus of the City Council that each of the two applicants was eminently
qualified to serve on the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee, and appointment to
fill one, unexpired three-year term to the end of November, 2014, was a difficult decision
for the Council to make.
Ultimately, Daniel (DJ) Allison was appointed. However, we will keep your application
in our files, and should a future vacancy occur on the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory
Committee, we will be most happy to notify you.
We thank you for your interest in this position and hope that you will maintain your
concern for the betterment of San Rafael through your participation in civic activities.
