RECOMMENDATION: Adopt Specifications for the project. BACKGROUND: Currently, the Department of Public Works Parks Division provides routine landscape maintenance at te City owned parks, nine City parkettes (mini -parks), three sports fields, City Hall, the Terra Lind e di swimming pool, the Falkirk cultural center, the library, three Community Centers and the Public Work headquarters. In addition, the Parks Division provides routine maintenance along the City's 24 acres o� medians, 16 acres of roadsidelandscaping and for more than 50,000 City trees. Over the past several years, parks maintenance staff has been reduced significantly. The division has been unable to spend sufficient time maintaining high use and high visibility areas such as the City parks, medians and roadsides, community centers, and sports fields. Hiring a contractor to perform routine landscape maintenance at the City's nine parkettes will allow Parks division staff to concentrate on the City's main facilities. City staff will continue to monitor and oversefs the work of the contractorand will also respond to emergency situations. ANALYSIS: Adoption of the specifications is necessary to go out to bid and for continued maintenance of the City's nine parkettes. The landscape maintenance contract will be in effect for one year, and may be renewed by the City for four additional one year terms. FISCAL IMPACT: Funds for this contract have been appropriated in the Measure A — Open Space special revenue fund, which received distributions from the County -wide 1/4 cent sales tax along with voluntary matching funds from the City's General Fund. The routine maintenance cost is estimated to be $55,,000 per year. N� 4 � File o.a , 48 Council Meeting*. if4 Disposition: OPTIONS: The Council may choose to: 1. Adopt the specifications for routine landscape maintenance and authorize the City Clerk to call for bids; or 2. Reject the specifications and direct Public Works to stop work on the project. If this option is pursued, maintenance of the nine City parkettes will be postponed. ACTION REQUIRED: Adopt specifications for the Parkette Routine Landscape Maintenance project on file with the City Clerk, and authorize the City Clerk to call for bids.
