RESOLUTION OF THE SAN RAFAEL CITY COUNCIL SUPPORTING
`LITQUAKE SAN RAFAEL'
AN ALL -DAY DOWNTOWN LIT -WALK ON OCTOBER 11T11
WHEREAS, Downtown is located in the center of San Rafael and it serves as the `heart
and soul' of the community; and
WHEREAS, San Rafael's literary culture is an integral part of our city, supported year
round by the San Rafael City Library, Friends Books (supporting the San Rafael Library),
Rebound Bookstore, Copperfield's Books, Open Secret Bookstore, the Marin Poetry Center; and
other San Rafael stores and venues; and
WHEREAS, Litquake SF is celebrating its 15th anniversary and invited Downtown San
Rafael to participate as its only North Bay partner; and
WHEREAS, Litquake seeks to foster interest in literature for people of all ages,
perpetuate a sense of literary community, and provide a vibrant forum for Bay Area writers; and
WHEREAS, Litquake has become the West Coast's most daring, innovative, and exciting
literary festival; and
WHEREAS, On October 11th, 2014, the entire Fourth Street corridor in Downtown San
Rafael will be the location for a new event in San Rafael -. `Liquake San Rafael'; and
WHEREAS, Seventeen downtown locations will host visitors who will come to hear
authors read their work across genres including science fiction at Gamescape, travel stories at
Rebound Bookstore, new works by local teens on the San Rafael library lawn, relationships in
Pleasures of the Heart, poetry on spiritual themes at Open Secret Bookstore, "wild style" lit at
Triumph, lunch at Lotus Chaat and El Chevere where local poets will hold free-for-all open mics,
and dinner at San Rafael Joe's, where `What's Cooking" will be on the menu; and
WHEREAS, the event will culminate with San Francisco's Conspiracy of Beards, a thirty
member male choir that performs dynamic, original, a cappella arrangements of the poetic songs
of Leonard Cohen which will be performed at the Belrose Theater, followed by an after party at
West End Cafe; and
WHEREAS, never before has an event in Downtown San Rafael brought authors and the
community together for an entire day.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council hereby supports the
inaugural `Litquake San Rafael' in Downtown San Rafael to celebrate the richness of the Bay
Area Literary community and introduce Downtown San Rafael to a broad literary audience.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Council encourages residents and visitors to
explore the unique retail, restaurants, and service businesses located in the Downtown before,
during, and after the `Liquake San Rafael' event.

Resolution was duly and regularly introduced and adopted at a re ular meeting of the City
Council of said City held on Monday, the sixth day of October, 2014 by the following vote, to
